Definitely safer than modding bridges and less cumbersome as soldering/cutting bridges or using the pin trick. Also non-permanent which is a huge bonus.

Has anyone identified which pins correspond to the L13 bridges (for default 266/333 FSB)? That's something I'm looking into doing.

3rd L12 cut or burn

The wire trick has been posted here many times. Just need to search.

(Its easier just putting the wire into the PGA socket on the MB BTW.)

Article exaggerates. What they show, without explaining what they're accomplishing, is "connecting the AJ27 and AH28 socket pins", with a conductive trace on the mobo, which is exactly what the famous "u-loop wire trick" on the other side of the socket has been doing for months and months...and same as connecting the bases of those CPU pins with conductive ink., another long known mod.

And btw, this mod is not a substitute for closing Palomino's open L1 bridges. All it does is ground the 5th bit, reset it LO in the event it's HI by default for Palomino 2100 and Tbred 2200 and up. It does "nothing", yes "nothing for CPUs with default Multipliers 12.5X and lower like 2000s and down, where some people with slow memory want to "raise" the default multiplier from less than 12.5X to 13X and up.

So hope y'all agree the article is vague /not clear in what it's doing. Why didn't they just say "here's another way to implement the wire trick". Modding the 5th bit LO from HI just "changes the default Multiplier to less than 12.5X", to the low 5X -12.5X range, where castrated mobos which can't access the low range with CPUs 13X and up default Multipliers...then can change Multipliers in that range...if and as long as L1s are closed.

Cool thanks for the link. Yah I've read up on some of those threads, but the link you posted is a bit confusing. I figured those with the high multis were simply doing the mod so that they could run lower multipliers and attain higher OC's via FSB (on 266mhz T-breds). What's odd is that I believe I read a few posts saying that 133mhz FSB users were modding the L12 so that their chips were recognized at default 166mhz. I'm experiencing the problems he's having, and my 2100+ is a default 133mhz chip.

I guess I was confused as I thought there were 2 different pin tricks,

1) to change between multiplier sets (> 13 and < 13) and
2) default 133mhz and default 166mhz.

Anyways, I'll look more into it tonite. Gonna try a few diff. BIOS versions as well.

sorry, my mistake...

That is for a 166 (333) default chip ... change to 133 (266) default.

Although the article is for improving the OC for the 333 chip on a Nforce2,,, The modification itself makes the chip defualt to 133 (266).

I dont know if closing the same bridge on a 133(266) chip would make it default to 166 (333).

referring to the original article posted (paint on backside of motherboard), I am guessing this only works on tbred chips? (The article does not make that distinction - it states just 'amd processors) I have an xp1600 I would love to try this on also but I bet it won't work. Anyone know for sure.

Plus, the pictures are of such poor quality that you cannot see which two spots they connected. I wish they would edit the image to 'enhance' the connection.

EDIT - ok, I just read JohnCar's wonderful post and he answered all my questions. I am one with crappy mem and want high multipliers on my tbred b 1700

this 'trick' will do nothing for me.

Based on what johncar said I'm guessing this won't do anything for my locked palomino?

You know, I'm sure the manufacturers of rear-window defogger kits are utterly mystified at the surge in their sales over the last couple years

I can see it now: "Windshield Defogger Repair / Athlon CPU Unlocking Kit" on the package

Now, is it just me, or is it an exaggeration to say "unlock your amd in 5 sec!" when it involves taking the motherboard out of the case?
