UNREAL TOURNEY problem!! plz help!

if someone can answer me this *please*!!:

WHEN I SURF THE WEB AND DOWNLOAD, MY SYSTEM FLIES.. but in UNREAL TOURNAMENT, I join games that list with a ping of less than 200, but my personal pingrate in the games is 3000-9000! uhhhhhhhg! lol.. any ideas why this is the case?

What type of internet connection are you using (DSL, cable, dial-up, etc.)? Does the ping problem only affect Unreal Tournament, or do other games (such as Quake 3) also report insanely high ping rates?

well, to be honest, ive only tried UT... running win98, with cable modem, dlink nic, on the mobo listed below in slot 6....

seems VIA ...PCI to USB controller is following my nic around no matter what IRQ i assign it to... could this be the problem? or should i tweak something? (i set "netpeed 18000" in UT console and chose "cable/dsl" for conn...

any ideas?

I don't think the PCI to USB controller is going to affect your ping times, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you have the ability, I'd try another game just for comparison purposes. But, for the meantime...

You could try contacting your cable modem provider and see if other people have reported problems. Or, you could try downloading a ping-reporting program (try CNET Downloads). I'd look for a specific one myself, but it's 5:13 AM where I'm posting from, and I think I should get some sleep before tomorrow.

thanks for the help thus far.. it's all so strange... ive run a dozen ping tests and they all say ive got a great conn... but UT hates me.

hmmm... I go into games that I ping from the list at about 150ms, and I end up above 3000...

im oging to try another nic this week, and the RoadRunner tech is coming next weekend to bring me a different brand nic (it's free, why not! lol)... but hopefully i can figure htis out on my own before that...

hmmm...what's also strange, and perhaps the whole problem, is that the activity lamp on my modem doesnt always flash right away while im surfing.. there is often a 10 to 20 second pause before the light indicates any traffic, then the pages load quickly... so this leads me to think that it's only MY problem based in hardware or software on this box... hmm

ok, im rambling.. but this is so damn frustrating...

yes! you are absolutely right and now im going to nuke my isp if they keep saying they cant help.. uhhg.. ok, kidding, but seriously, im averaging a consistant 29% packet loss in UT now... sucks..
