i just made a system with
a AMD duron 800 mhz with a FIC AZ11E mobo.
all the cards and drives i do not think matters with my question BUT
i did overclock the CPU to 950 mhz (got a better heatsink fan) and increased the voltage. My CPU is not overheating its at a good 36 degrees Celsius.

The problem is, my comp FREEZES... it usually only freezes when i play CounterSTrike but just yesterday it froze when i was using word and my other apps. I was wondering if this had anything to do with me overclockin the CPU or upping the voltage.

I need some help trying to figure out why its freezing. my OS is WIN2k i installed service pack 2. dunno what else to install. The comp worked GREAT for the first 2 months and now im expierencing these problems.

what should i do? would increasing the voltage help make it more stable? or that wouldnt even matter? I dont want to decrease the speed of the CPU cause i had it at a gighz but that was way unstable and had to sacrifice 50 mhz. heehee

any info would be appriciated

thankz

Raising the Cv can help with stability. But it will create more heat so watch your temps. I run my P3 at 1.9 CV and 155 FSB, no problems what so ever.

I'm no expert, but I heard cheapie powers supplys can make your system unstable cuz it can't provide a continous current to your CPU, especially if you have many drives and peripherals running. Try upgrading your PSU to a reliable brand or a least above 300 watts.

GnaisH,

It could also be that you are pushing your CPU too far. Some CPUs overclock more than others. A couple of things to try. Make sure your voltage is 1.85. Is your comouter stable at the default CPU speeds. If it is and the computer still hangs when OCed, then try OCing a little less. Keep OCing a little less until it becomes stable.

If none of this fixes the problem, then it is probably your PS.

Hope this helps.

i have no idea. My other friend suggested it was my power supply also... but when i brought it over to his place, it seemed to work perfectly fine, i was there with my comp the whole day and played CounterSTrke and there were no problems.....hopefully there will be no problems if i plug it in at home, otherwise im stumped.

thankz for the info.

My CPU is not overheating its at a good 36 degrees Celsius.

I assume that's idle temps, right? What kind of heatsink do you got?

Because when I'm playing games (Counterstrike) my full load temps get up to 49C. And when it reaches above say..53C my system freezes too! I'm getting a new heatsink for my system (PAL6035) and a new power supply & case for my rig (Enermax CS-A1QX-06 comes with Enermax EG301P-VB (300W) PSU) this weekend.

My system's been running unstable since I built it (back in february) but since lowering my VCore and intalling some case fans, it's been running more stable. So I thought maybe going a little further with the new PSU and HSF will help a lot.

I'll tell you how it goes.

I am sorry, but all of you are wrong :\ I had this same problem.. goto amd.com and there is a product update for win2k and athlon processors using agp slots. Its a registery update that requires a reboot.. After installing this I have easily got 7 days uptime, that isn't saying much, but for windows...

It could be any number of Issues:
Things to try:
Increase Core Voltage to the max (1.85 volts, likely).
Run Prime95's torture test. If your computer doesn't pass (ie you get one of its screwy errors) you know the overclock is the problem, and not your AGP drivers or anything else like that.
If Prime95 passes, then the problem is with the game and your AGP/Video drivers, and not the overclock. Try increasing your I/O voltage to provide more to the video card and make sure your case is well ventilated with regards to cooling the video card.

You can find Prime95 at ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/prime95.zip
