Upcoming high-end video cards?

Anyone know what's next for Nvidia and ATI in the high-end video card segment?

The 8800 GTX has been the fastest card on the market since November of last year, save for the marginally improved and vastly more expensive Ultra edition which could potentially be considered a summer refresh.

So far I haven't heard much of anything about new cards that will dethrone the GTX. Typically I remember there's a usual 'fall reresh' for Nvidia cards, but right now it doesn't seem like there's much of a point. Does anyone know if there's going to be a fall refresh this year, or is the 8800 GTX going to stay the fastest card until 2008?

The way things have been going, I don't think we'll see the "refresh" we are all accustomed to. I think NV will jump right to next gen (G9x) and have no idea what AMD will do. I'm gonna guess Novemberish/Decemberish for G9x. Just in time for the Yule.

I agree with keys. While compiling my new box, I anxiously awaited AMD's videocard release, hoping it would drive down nVidia prices and restart the speed-king war. I was more than just sorely disappointed.

Now nVidia can take their time and spend their dime. So if you want a new videocard, just get one...don't wait for prices to fall or any secret-sauce release from AMD, cuz it's highly unlikely anything is going to change before Xmas, and the longer you wait, the less fun you will have.

I agree with both keys and slug...My only issue is that I always want the high end and can barely afford mainstream...:|

If NV releases their G9x in Nov/Dec....I think I just might be ready this time.

There was some fairly recent word (withiin the May-June timeframe) about a final, 8900 level GPU between now and early December. Not a necessary part for competition, though, so perhaps it will be cancelled.

I think all the new stuff NV 9xxx or ATI next gen are all scheduled for late this year or early next year. Don't seem to be much competition in g-card until next year. Perhaps they all gone into a silent agreement to not update anything and keep the prices high for both companies.

last I have seen suggests g92 (geforce 9800?) will be out around november (probably right around crysis's release), and r700 will not be until early next year.

NVIDIA better release the 9 series this November in time for Crysis, my current rig is enough for current games but I want Crysis in all its glory and I won't settle for anything less than a quad core Penryn and a spanky new 9800GTS or GTX or whatever they will be called.

Well you gotta wait on that Penryn until Q1 08 unless you're going to buy the Extreme Edition. I'm hoping for G92 myself though as well, as soon as possible. Not that G80 isn't already overkill, but (see sig)

Really? I thought Penryn was supposed to be out next quarter? What happened there? In any case I don't think there will be much difference in high resolution Crysis gaming between a Kentsfield and a Penryn if both are on a G9x but still damn.

It will be out next quarter, in the form of the QXwhatever @ 3.33Ghz... But the cheaper, more mainstream versions will not likely be out before next year. In other words, the transision to Penryn will be gradual, from what current information specifies.
