<< Actually, Sony announced that they will announce (interesting, huh? ) a price drop at E3. >>

Where did you see this? I haven't seen anything saying this, and the weekly email column I get from John Davidson of gamers.com said that sony wasnt dropping prices on the ps2 yet (and that was last week).

In all honesty, I wouldn't even really consider a price drop on the ps2 if I were sony until one of two things happened:

a) The XBox/GC comes from behind and starts selling like mad
b) They release the ps2 hard drive / ethernet kit, and start charging say $75 for it. Then a price drop to $225 would be logical if the xbox price stayed the same. You get more games, plus broadband and a HDD for the same price as an xbox.

Apparently they can cram all the ps2's processing stuff onto one chip now. That's going to lower manufacturing costs, so if I was running Sony's game console division, I'd keep the price at $300 while they're still selling well. GTA3 is still selling systems (that's why I bought mine). It makes sense to keep making as much money as possible while you still can if the console becomes profitable

I could have sworn they announced it back when they originally announced that they would be introducing the Greatest Hits line on the Playstation 2. I would do some searching, but I really don't feel like it right now

BTW, anyone play NBA2k2? I'm not a HUGE b-ball fan but I could use some sports games. I don't want NFL, NHL, MLB as I already have those games on my PC, but maybe NBA 2k2 wouldn't be a bad choice. How is it?

I like NBA2K2 a lot. It's more a simulation than Live. You can really get down in the paint and knock your opponent around. It's got better gfx than Live and I think is a much more technical game than live. You can't just throw the ball down the court and turbo your way to a slam dumk.

You are correct about that, but now that I think about it, it might have just been for Euro and Aust. markets. But, at the time, everyone was saying that if they lowered the price there, they are going to lower it here as well. Now, a month later, people realize that isn't true.

You probably should have waited. The Xbox has had a price cut practically everywhere but the US so it would be logical that we are next. One thing that you might want to check into is that if someone bought the Xbox within a certain time window of the price drop they could get two games (from a pre-selected list but I know Halo was on it) and a controller for free. Looks like I will be getting one to go along with my PS2 pretty soon.

NBA 2K2 is the best basketball simulation out right now. No matter which system you get it on, it is the best. If you prefer over the top style basketball games then you should just get NBA Streets. For anyone who seriously follows basketball, NBA 2K2 is the only choice.

As for buying a PS2 for GTA3. It's coming out on Xbox and it's coming out on PC cheaper.

How is the career mode? Free agency...draft... trades... all that work pretty well?

Oh well. I'd rather have it RIGHT NOW than wait 2 months and save 50 bucks.

No, I can't stand over the top kind of games like that. I love hockey & I won't even touch NHL Hitz. Yuk.

At the same time, I don't seriously follow the NBA, but I enjoy basketball games. Maybe I will go with 2k2.

Actually judging from this the price drop was a little more than that, around 100-150 american $. That's pretty sweet. Now if I wasnt losing my job I would be all set.....well my birthdays coming up so it looks like it is time to start dropping hints to the GF.

Hmmm... I'm so torn up about whether or not to buy an XBox. I got a GameCube a couple months ago and just built a new PC so I think that I'll wait.
Here were the points that helped me decide to not purchase a PS2 or XBox:
1. I want Halo, but it will be on PC soon enough (and I'd prefer to play it on PC anyway).
2. I want Burn Out (PS2 game) but it will be on Game Cube in about 2 weeks.
3. I want GTA3, but it will be on PC soon also.
4. DOA3 is not necessary once Soul Calibur 2 comes out.
5. I want Smuggler's Run (PS2 game) but it will be on Game Cube at some point (forget when).

The only thing that I am upset about is the ability to have a console system with a HDD and ethernet connection... in the end that my convince me.
Oh, and BTW, you should definently get SSX Tricky! This game is the freakin' bomb! I HATE sports games with a passion, but Tricky is excellent!

I don't think that the XBox or the PS2 have enough platformers (games that are ONLY on that system, for those who don't know the term). It seems as though most of the really good games for the PS2 or XBox also come out for the other 2 consoles (Game Cube and PS2/Xbox), or for PC. Game Cube however has some great platformers: Luigi's Mansion, Monkey Ball (I think this is only for GC), Mario Kart, Mario, Pikmin, SuperSmash Bros.

Just some more thoughts...

"Gran Turismo vs Project Gotham? They are completely different styles of racing games. PGR is more about skill while GT3 is more about building up. It would be like comparing Shenmue to Virtua Fighter or to be more extreme Ergheiz and Tobal to Final Fantasy. Some people will prefer PGR for the extra skill it takes to finish with all golds while other will prefer to get their licenses and build up their car to unrealistic proportions in GT3. I am a person who prefer PGRs style more. My cousin prefers GT3s style more. It's not something you can compare unless you play both games (which most playstation fans do not BTW)."

With this comment, I hope you got all gold in the Gran Turismo Licensing Tracks. Otherwise your skill is severely lacking. Also, How'd you fair on the Formula 1 racing series in Special? And Gran Turismo requires tons of friggen skill if you use an underclassed car or a car that matches its opponents. You are assuming you HAVE to only do the easy races until you can afford a good car and then go back and do the others with a better car. That is not the case.

You really MUST rent nba 2k2 before buying it. I played NBA 2k enough to know it was overrated. I started a franchise with fantasy draft and had mostly tall players. I won every game up to 60 games, and this was with shaq and rasheed wallace injured. In 2k you win by having tall players dunk every possession. In NBA 2k2, the dunk "bug" is gone, but the game is still not much fun to play. There are major AI bugs, and the computer seems to do everything that you can't do well. The jumper is totally messed up, because guys like ray allen and wally szerbiak miss open jump shots all the time in the game, but once you go to practice you make 99% of them, and seem to have no way to improve your jump shots. The game is just good enough to make you hold it to a higher standard, at which point it fails you miserably.

Last but not least, if you start a fantasy draft and tell the computer to auto-pick for you, it almost never picks correctly even based on its own rankings. I set it up so I had first pick overall and it chose someone whose overall rank wasn't even highest in that position.

You've got your terms wrong. A platformer is a type of game. You are thinking exclusives, not platformers. A platformer is something along the lines of Sonic, Jak and Daxter, Oddworld, Mario, etc.

The thing that scares me about the Gamecube is that Nintendo's last system took a beating when they could only come up with 1 new game a month. I know it was cartridge based and that drives up publisher's costs, but I'm holding off for now. The GC is a proprietary disc which means it isn't as easy to publish the games. And knowing Nintendoss pretty tough testing and approval policy, I'd say the jury is still out on whether it can get any where near PS2's library numbers. I realize quantity doesn't mean quality, but you have a better chance of hitting quality throwing 200 darts rather than 2. And, having a huge selection of games is important for me b/c people like different stuff. You may hate one game that I love, and vice versa.

<< edit:

Well I got my XBox. Decided to only get 2 games, my local EB didn't have SSX Tricky and I didn't really research too many other games, so for now I can live with DOA3 and PGR(WOW I love this game so far!)
>>

NO HALO!?!?!? :Q

Right now Halo is the only game I play for the Xbox...and I'm not complaining about that. It's just awesome. This is the first game I've really enjoyed enough to sit down and play through the whole thing (well, almost...just a couple levels to go ). I'm not even done with the game yet and I want to play it again.
Running around shooting aliens, driving trucks, tanks, hoover craft type things, planes, etc is just awesome.

Oh, and Xbox's first RPG is due up in a couple weeks. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has promised to be a very entertaining game at the very least. So we'll see

Well, I work tomorrow, so I will see what games we have that I can get... I get 10% off so I might pick up a few.

Morrowind is already on pre-order for my PC...so that's taken care of.

I have gotten all licenses and unlocked all cars in GT3. It was no where near as hard as winning with all golds in PGR. To completely clear GT3 took my 3 weeks and most of that was racing the same 5 tracks to build up my money. PGR took 2 months and the last month of that was perfecting my driving to finish the Arcade Hard and Very Hard races with gold.

How much have you played PGR and how much have you played GT3 is my question. There is no doubt in my mind that PGR is a more challenging racing game.

Rallisport is also great but only if you like rally style racing. For me, I have both PGR and Rallisport but I like PGR better because there is a lot more strategy involved in tarmac racing. I still thing Halo and PGR are the best games the Xbox has and I have 6 games in total.

My question was not whether you had unlocked all the cars or gotten all the licenses. It was have you gotten GOLD in all the licenses? (obviously a tad different) And how you faired in the Formula 1 series, which is a race specifically for Formula 1 racecars. You said you unlocked all the cars, does that mean you had a 100% completion on your status menu? I also note you raced the same 5 tracks to build up money, as I referred to as the wussy method in my previous post.

Regarding your question, I havn't played PGR. But if you notice, I never mentioned PGR in my post, I'm not rating it, I'm not buying an Xbox to play it, and I'm not making fun of it. My comments were solely based on your comments on GT3. I am not trying to determine which is a better racing game, but whether you actually played GT3 for a challenge or to take the easy way out and then whine that it was easy.
