Update: Suse 10.1

I just installed Suse 10.1 on my lappy the other day, glancing over at my lappy when sitting at my desk here at work i noticed one thing.

My HD light is going nuts, when i log back into it, where are the event viewer/activity log things to see what happened??

It could be beagle indexing the stuff on your laptop. I think Suse has that stuff enabled by default. Desktop search and all that.

There are lots of system monitors you can use.

There is the traditional 'top' command. You run it from a terminal.

My new favorite is htop, which is very advanced thing similar to top.

Gnome has gnome-system-monitor that you can run. You can probably find it through the menu, or you can hit alt-f2 and type gnome-system-monitor, or run it from a terminal. You can also add performance monitoring applets to your toolbar to have little icons for your cpu and memory and such.. it's configurable. If you double click on it it will launch gnome-system-monitor.

KDE has similar stuff, but I forget how it works.


Then there are eye candy-type monitors.. like Gkrellm or high performance conky.

I installed Wine, but now i cant seem to find the damn thing..........where o where did it go.....?

I don't know if there's any GUI wrappers for wine, usually when I use it I just run 'wine some_windows.exe'. It's also possible that they setup the win32 PE executable personality for you and some_windows.exe can be run directly now.

WINE doesn't use Windows for anything by default, so no it shouldn't affect it at all.

The little chameleon/start (or whatever he is) menu at the bottom doesn't have anything in it?

i am trying to open a webpage from adobe and it says that the browser for reader hasnt been configured, where would i go to find the firefox files. home? usr? bin?

it is not opensuse, it is regualar suse. So no that is not it.

Probably /usr/bin/wine.

Most Linux users don't care where the package files go since some binary/script always ends up in your PATH and if it's a GUI app in the menu so there's no point in worrying about what files are where.

Another question:
every time I try to get on my corporate wifi, it prompts me "Enter Password for default Keyring to unlock" "The application 'nm-applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked"

I enter the pw for the corporate wifi, then the same message pops up again and i type it again, then it goes away and then it allows me to the corporate network.

What is this doing?
