Hello everyone. First post here. I've searched all over the net and haven't found an answer to this question.

OK, I just upgraded my wife's pc with that "buy an AMD64 3400 and get a free socket 754 mobo combo" from newegg. she currently has a 9600XT 256meg AGP and I was wanting to upgrade that to bring her system closer to being up-to-date. I was thinking about the 7600gs because i dont really have to spends the $260-ish on the 7800gs. other possibilities are the 6600gt or the 6800xt (all seem to be around the same price +/- $20 at newegg). i haven't seen any reviews that directly compare these cards in the agp format. i used to like tom's hardware's vga chart but i hate this new interactive chart that they have. anyway....what your opinions? as you can tell i'm a nvidia guy, but if any of you suggest an ati card, i'll consider it. thanks.

first i hope you went with the biostar nforce 250 board. Another thing, be sure to pick an AGP video card. AGP is quite outdated right now but you can still find a decent card to run for another few years. As you said, the 7800gs is a little too expensive for you, so i suggest get this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130036

or if you can afford 20$ more get this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143045

the last one is the 6 series but it is faster than the 7600gs and has all the important features.

The naming conventions that Nvidia and ATI use may eventually drive all of us insane

I believe the 6800gs measures up well to the 6800gt but the 7600gs can't touch the 7600gt. If you're confining your choices to Nvidia I'd see if someone isn't sneaking a 7600gt into their agp lineup. That would probably make for a good choice. Otherwise I'd check the For Sale/Trade forum for a good deal on a 6600gt or 6800gt.

You may be able to find someone that has an AGP card like a 6800GT that wants to sell it. This may be better than buying new for the right price anyway.

The X800XT and X800XL are both AWESOME deals.

Worth switching over to ATI for.

thanks for all the ideas, everyone. now i'm torn between ati and nvidia. of course i'm not going to be buying a new card until around the 4th of next month, so who knows, maybe someone will have a 7600gt agp out by then.

They will probably but there are few companies confirming the release of the 7600gt(2 i think.) therefore, the comp[etition will be low and the prices will be high.

Nvidia agp cards usually cost more than the pci-e comparable cards by quite a bit so I wouldnt doubt a $200 or $209 7600gt which imho isnt owrth it over a basically 90% as fast $119 x800xl or comparable $160 x800xt.

If still considering an ATI don't forget about their trade in deals.

http://shop.ati.com/tradeup.asp

They have the (new cards btw)

All-in-Wonder? X800 XT 256MB AGP USD$129.00 Credit USD$50.00

&

Radeon® X1600 PRO 512MB AGP USD$149.00 Credit USD$50.00

They send you the card and you pay $179 but then get the $50 credit when you turn in any pos vid card.

Best prices I've seen for the AIW X800XT.

I'm considering this for a 9800 pro replacement that is giving me trouble.

There is currently only one example of an 7600 gt, AGP:

http://www.leadtek.com/3d_graphic/winfast_a7600_gttdh_1.html

although I'm sure that others will follow soon.

I'm also torn. I managed to get in on the X850PRO deal, from ATI, but the X800XT AIW, with the trade in of my 9600 Pro would be actually $10 cheaper and given the 850 is in back order, I still have the option.

What would you do?

I'd probably go with the AIW.

But I wouldn't trade in the 9600 Pro. Could probably find in trade forum a really old vid card to trade in. Doesn't matter make or age just something to trade in. Then sell 9600 Pro to recoup a few dollars.
