Basically, im running the system in my signature. I used to be a hardware / upgrade addict. still am but getting married in sept and after that wont have the money to be quiet so hard core. finding im not gaming quiet as much these days, spending more of my time on the desktop. i have a £300 pound agp monster sitting there not getting much use.

I'm very worried that my current set up, due to the transitional period, will mean a fullon upgrade in the future, rather than a incramental one, due to the lack of a chipset supporting both agp / and pcie, or infact just pci-e on the 754 platform.

Now, i saw a socket 754 mob, not unlike mine, and a 3200+ hammer go on ebay tongiht, for £151. a AGP 6800GT is currently on £179 with 19 bids on it and 2 and a half days to go, I reccon it will go for over £200. so those to together are worth £350 to me at the moment.
for that sort of money i can get a asus a8n sli, a 3200+ winchester 939 and a 6600GT.

Now, I know its a downgrade, but im looking for the future. the way i see it, i may as well get rid of my stuff now whilst it still has value.

Socket 754 is dead and a 3200+ winchester will be a slight increase over a 3200 hammer, whilst letting me upgrade just the cpu later. also, dual core is a very real interest to me and it aint gonna happen on 754, yet its looking like toledo may well sit nicely in a 939 nf4 system. also, when i upgrade in the future i will have a very nice 6800GT and no slot for it on my new board. this change of hardware will mean ill have cards to go with my next upgrade.

As I have said earlier, I know its a downgrade in some senses, but i see it as looking at the long term. this way I will have a platform i can upgrade modualrly again, and as i will be a henpecked husbad with no money for pc bits in less than six months, it will be far easier for me to upgrade the 939 / pci-e setup then to replace the whole core on my current set up.also the sli board means i should be able to plump back up to my current gt's power level by sli'ing the 6600's if i can save a few £'s b4 the wedding.

Bottom line, using my AGP 6800GT's value to roll onto the pci-e / 939 / sli platform at the expense of a 6600GT.

Do You guys think this is a good idea, or am I crackers LOL.

Thaughts please.

AND, you the benefits aren't worth the money now, wait a year, everything you buy will be a DECIMAL of the cost, and the benefits will be seen then. PCIE is a waste of time right now.

yeah i know agp vs. pci-e theres no benefit yet, apart from i have a nice card that any new system board wont have a agp slot on. so i will have to upgrade the whole lot, and i wont be able to afford that

They will still be making AGP versions of the new cards at least for another year so I wouldn't rush it. Only reason I guess is if you are diehard set on going SLI, which yo will get at most a 30% gain which I don't feel rates the cost of another VGA card.

If I had the money, I would have a system like yours, except a different mobo, but I got a deal on my system, used parts and still kills alot of my friends machines.. and.. thats all its really about right ;D).
