So I got a new laptop, an HP Pavillion from Circuit City, said it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Ok, it did, installed. The only thing resembling Vista software is this "Upgrade anytime" disc, has no key on it or anything, does not appear to be the OS. Am I missing something? Because I am going to raise hell if these people sold me a PC withjust the operating system installed and no licensed software copy to go with it.

A lot of hardware vendors, unfortunatley, don't include install media. Perhaps there's a "recovery" partition on your hard drive?

One option would be to do a full system backup.

Unless they've changed with Vista, HP hasn't given out System Restore CDs for quite a while. They put a Recovery Partition on the hard drive and install a program that creates a set of Restore CD/DVDs that you have to make yourself. A recent MCE 2005 HP Pavilion required several CDs to make the restoration disks.

Personally, I'd never buy a PC that didn't come with an OS- or System Restore- CD/DVD. I recommend obtaining one now, since HP may not offer one once your PC goes out of warranty.

If I am not mistaken, I think the " Upgrade anytime disk " a full version Vista Disk. Try to boot off of it and you will know for sure.

An anytime upgrade disc can be used to upgrade Vista, by visiting MS Marketplace, and buying a key to unlock whatever your choice of upgrade is. Actually, ALL the versions of Vista are on that disc.

It's basically useless unless you want to pay money to M$ for a "better" version of windows vista if you already have a "lesser" version of vista installed.

It won't restore your computer. There's probably a "hidden" partition for that. You can't miss it. It takes up about 20G of your hd.

The upgrade anytime disk has all versions of Vista on it except Corporate. You can install any version on it and use it for 30 days if you don't have a code. If you do have a code you can input the code. I did this with my laptop as a way of getting rid of all the extra crap and just having Vista on it.
