Looking for some opinions on an upgrade. Our eldest just bought Ark: Survival Evolved and then complained that it didn't run well - an excellent sympathy strategy for getting upgraded. They've been struggling with old hardware for a while but didn't run anything demanding before. I've looked at this article for some vague guidance on this game... https://www.pcgamer.com/ark-survival-evolved-is-the-new-crysis-of-pc-hardware/
Current hardware is a Core i3 of some flavour, either Sandy or Ivy bridge, 8GB DDR3 and GTX 560TI 2GB. Yeah, no wonder it runs badly. I have an i5 2500K doing nothing that I can drop in there, but I'm 90% sure the board is not overclockable so it'll still only be 3.3GHz.
The main problem of course is the hopeless GPU, and I know it's the worst time ever to be buying one. I have a GTX 1060 in my computer and I'm considering handing it down as I don't game much lately. The 1060 looks like about the minimum card needed to do better than 30fps on Ark. Will the non-overclocked 2500K hold it back too much to be worth bothering? If so the next step is to start looking at handing down my whole rig and/or buying new hardware.
