Upgrade Now or Wait?

Seeing that S939 processors aren't being made anymore, should I snatch up a dual core (say Opteron 165) right now before they go out of existence or go way up in price? I JUST got a PCI-E S939 board so I neither have the spare cash nor the desire to go AM2 or C2D.

Regardless of whether I upgrade now or not, this computer is going to last me for at least another 18 months before the soonest major system overhaul. Opinions?

If you can score a good deal on one, I'd jump on it as you would get a nice pump in performance...but don't break the bank on anything. I wouldn't spend much more than 100 bones...

I figure a A64 3000+ retail box can resale for about $40-50 on ebay. And an Opteron 165 can be had for about $150. Is that considered a good deal?

If you're planning on staying with the system for more than a year or so, yes, it's a good deal.

It's still retail box, as opposed to OEM. Just not NIB

I went from a A64 3000+ to an FX-55 and am happy with the performance boost! I also like the fact that the FX-55 is unlocked (overclocking made easy). I would have liked to have a dual core, but I can wait another year (at least). Maybe by then, quad core will be the standard. I did not want to go with the AM2 platform as it doesn't really offer much of a performance boost. The C2D system is attractive, but I really do not want to replace the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. My current system is pretty fast and very stable. Plus, I thought the Intel-based motherboards were overpriced and a little buggy at the time I was making my decisions. I am waiting for AMD's next generation CPU before I make the switch.

My issue is that I want 2MB instead of 1. Why spend $220 or so now on DDR RAM ...why not jump to AM2...decisions decisions

Oops sorry got carried away before the party tonite- to OP I did what you are thinking and got an opty 148 and 165 for spares - using them in my spare boards

An Opteron 165 is a very high performance processor when OCed, and it is a virtual certaintly to get to at the very least 2.6 ghz, with a little work 2.8Ghz or even more.

You would be hard pressed to get a better performing system that will show real world improvement for only $150

I have the same problem. Am on a 3000+, so I guess this is the right thread for a bit of sub-advise! Do you know any firm that ships internationally, as I live in the UK, and with the exchange rate, I am getting an oppy in the UK for 225 dollars. Is there any way beforehand of finding out the stepping that is shipped from the US if there is such a firm?

I finally gave into the dual-core. (Socket 939) I've been holding on to my Opteron 146 @3.0GHz (excellent memory controller which did DDR600/2.5-3-3-7), but figured there won't be many Socket 939 CPUs as time goes by, I picked up an Opteron 165 for $155 from the Egg. With stock voltage, stock cooling, stock everything, it's stable @2.80GHz. Very satisfied.

lopri what's your stepping? CCBBE 06xx?
