What info do I need to look for to be able to upgrade my P3. Will any P3 chip fit into my mobo? Would also like to upgrade to W98, what's the cheapest way?

Sisoft sandra will tell you teh max CPU that your mother board will support. (as far as mhz is concerened) Then you'll have to see whether your bios will support a Cumine. If not check to see if it will support a katmai. Give us more system specs. It will be easier to help you.

Went home at lunchtime and found I have a P-233. As far as more info would you suggest opening the case for the data? I hoping to take advantage of some of the upgrade deals I see in hot deals but I'm not smart enough yet to know what and where to start with my equip. If you know of a good place to begin reading up on info I'm willing to start there.
Thanks.

Well if you have a P233 it's a socket 7 CPU and there is no way a PIII is going to work with your current setup. You need to buy a whole new system if want a PIII. Completely different setup although you could probably re-use the old Hard Disk, monitor and maybe even the mouse but the rest has aint going to do. Your best bet is to sell the old system and use the cash to put towards a whole new setup. If you are worried about opening the case then I suggest you go and buy a new machine off the shelf at your local PC retailer..
Good Luck

After looking I can't find any P2 indication. I have opened many cases and upgraded processors. I am still a novice and like the help of the informed. I enjoy reading all the information in this forum and hope to come up to speed someday. I'm just getting anxious to try this o/c sometime and my old machine at home may be a waist of time. If I should try and construct a machine from component purchases, what can I do for operating software and the rest of the freebees that come with a purchased package. Have a good holiday.

hey bean crusher you can start trying to OC that 233. if you have the manual for your mother board, or know the brand and can find their web site, try upping the voltage to 75mhz from the current 66mhz.
you will do this by moving some jumpers around, easy to fix if no work.
most of the 233's i,ve seen do this no problem. at most you might need to get a little better heat sink, but i doubt it.this will put you in the 262mhz range and get your OC habit started
have fun

Bean Crusher: We all had to start somewhere and there are plenty of PC hardware sites out there but you couldn't have a better start that right here on AnandTech. There are extencive reviews on all types of PC hardware and I suggest you start reading. Try Toms Hardware as well as a second opinion always helps to make the right choices.
http:/www.tomshardware.com.
To tell the truth without people like Anand and Tom, people like us would never be nearly as informed and up to date on PC Hardware Technology as we are today. An they have saved me plenty of time and cash as well into the bargain. I have probably built a modest 30 or so PC's in my time for family, friends and work collegues mainly on the advise of Anand, Tom and others. This is not an attempt to brownose but just an opportunity to take my hat of to Anand and the team for doing a great job..Cheers!!!
