should i keep going up the s939 ladder? buy a am2 board and get am2 (i'm using asrock 939dual-sata2)? or star over and go the intel route?

I'm not sure an AM2 upgrade will gain you much. You can pick up Opty's real cheap now and pump up your current board. AMD's path seems a little clouded still. Three socket changes in three years? Horsefeathers.

If you are going to start over, then definitely go with Intel.

Otherwise, I'd probably skip AM2 entirely. There's no performance increase going from 939 to AM2 if clock speeds are the same.

If you overclock, then consider getting a cheap Opteron. If you're content with the amount of RAM you have now, then just stick with 939.

You could try selling your rig you got now, and get some cash for an upgrade. I made around 300 bucks on selling my old socket 754 rig, and going AM2. The CPU in my sig below only costs 69 bucks, and can OC very well paired up with the right board, memory. I ended up only spending 50-60 bucks out of my pocket, and the performance is night and day compared to a very fast single core CPU.

If you're happy with the amount of RAM you have now, just get some cheap opteron and upgrade the proc.
If you're not happy with your RAM, you could either wait around for another 6 months and get Agena/Penryn, or you could just go with a C2D.

This is the best answer. You may not have the biggest benchmarks, but you will stretch that platform for another year.

If you dont mind overclocking, i would grab an opteron 175 ($154) for the 11x multipler and get it to 2.7 - 2.9 ghz. That should be enough horse power for maybe a year.

opteron 165 $99 -< slower then you current chip (1.8ghz), but dual core
opteron 170 is $114

The only reason to change platforms now is if you need more ram since ddr prices are no longer competitive. I wouldnt dont go spend $300-$400 upgrading to see bencmarks increase, and i havent.

I went from 3200+ -> x2 3800+ @2.7ghz

I'm thinking of moving that chip over to my secondary gamer, and grabbing a opteron 175 for my rig, but i already have 2gb of ram so a new platforn right now doesnt appeal to me.

I wouldn't upgrade to AM2 right now...it's about to be replaced with AM2+.. so I'd sit on your current setup for now...faster things are coming soon..

just want to do a bit of cpu upgrading so it won' be bottlenecking my card hmm

seems like am2 would not be a good idea so i'm left with either

1) get opteron
or
2) go intel

just a couple of questions

if i go opteron, will i need to get new ram as well? or do i just need to grab the cpu

and for intel

i'll have to get a new board, the cpu, and new ddr2 ram correct? :s

if those are right then i might just get opteron for a small boost before building a whole new system since s939 is becoming obsolete

which would be better performance/money wise if (in cdn)

 Opty 165 @ $105. OC to 2.4+ conservatively and you will probably good for another year or two.

you can get a cheap opteron on newegg. they have several open boxes that were not there 2 days ago, too.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...050706979&name=Opteron
wow, those open boxes don't last long! there was an opteron 180 oem for 160.99 3 hrs ago but it is already gone! I should know since I ordered a retail opt 180 on sat and I've been checking the prices 3x / day to make sure that I didn't overpay... I paid 179.99 but I needed the hsf so I'm ok with that.

what card do you have? what resolution do you play at? and what games do you play?

you'd be surprised at how little of a difference bottlenecking can make (depending on the games you play and at was resolution).

I've just ordered my x2 3800 toledo core, for 85 euro's, s939 of course. I figured that this CPU will last me at least another year and a half, oc-ed to 2.6ghz, and in the meantime I can buy a new pci-e card when I really need one, since I don't right now, and then take that gpu to my next new system.

Newegg doesn't ship to europe ... The day they will, I will make sure everybody in Holland get's to know about it I'd love ordering a x2 3800+ for 80$, thats 62 euro's, instead of 85 euro's, quite the difference

yes, but you are within a stone's throw of amsterdam, berlin, paris, and london, while I'm 100 miles from houston and 1500 miles from LA or New York. I'd happily pay the extra $30 or so!

yeah, 85 euro's isn't to much, I payed roughly 90 euro's or so a year ago for my venice 3000+ so it's nothing crazy for a higher clocked, dual core

cpu charts on tom's lets you compare just about anything. It has a lot of others mixed in too, but it should give you all the info you need. fx 60 is the best skt 939 chip available (13x200). If you looking today to upgrade to that level then get an opteron 185, it is basically the same chip with maybe a little bit more reliability since it was originally designed for server use. The opteron is also 1/2 the price or better.

I went 3200+ (winchester) to 4000+ (san diego) a few months ago, my 3200+ ran at 2520 (280x9) and my 4000+ at 2830 (280x10), but the CPU is much faster than the mere 300MHz of speed it shows. I am limited to 280MHz due to something...

I paid $79. I have a 6800GT 512MB OC'd to around ultra speeds. I play at 1600x1200 in WoW, I have tried Doom4 and some of the other demos at pretty highrez/eye candy settings and while I couldn't max it...I had great framerates and very good image quality.

My next upgrade would be to snag a 7950 or x1950xt cheap siding with the slightly inferior 7950 for it better power consumption and heat generation though.

heh alkemyst thats exactly what I'm gonna do, sell my 7600gs, and get a 1950xt or a 7950 for around 170 euro's I think. That'll keep me going for a while ...

no, as far as I'm concerned the multiplier goes up with 1 by each of them. The fsb is constand at 200.
