"- $200 dropped on a 4890 is a much safer expense; what are you going to save in the next 3 months - $40? maybe? "

No..more like $3000 or so, but like I said.. a lot of it I have to budget out for other expenses. And I have a gf so I am not worried about that whole deal lol, if she gets prego I will just toss her down some stairs. KIDDING!!! but..hey the price is only only to go down, but i def. plan on getting it.

I went from two evga 8800gts 512 in sli to an HIS hd 4890 and I don't regret it. In most games I see a performance increase and I'm happy to have a single card that doesn't microstutter. My power draw has lessened considerably along with the heat.

Yeah the 4890 is gunna be prob the best deal out there once the price drops the estimated $50 in the next month or two.

Z1ggy you can get a lot in your price range these days. That said there has been a lot of talk about the 4890 so I wanted to tell you how mine is working for me. I have the XFX and have it clocked at 960/1015 stable(6 +hrs of LOTRO). I play LOTRO and have ran it at that speed @ 1680x1050 highest settings and it is butter! I have seen the game run on my old 3870X2 and a friends Sli 8800's and this card is faster. I also run mine @ 500/490 in CCC when just doing 2d apps and video and it runs great and is around 36C and just kick it back up to game.

Will yours overclock this good.... don't know. But even at 900/1015 it is one heck of a card and with the price drop a great deal. You will have enough card to set out the next gen.... let them iron it out and get in on the second run at a better price.

Just my 2 cents and good luck on your choice. Make sure you let us all know how it works out.

i got a 2900xt that will match it

Sure it is fine for you; but you are not the OP, asking over and over - begging someone to tell him it is OK to upgrade

4890 is a great upgrade. BtW, you would also like a 4890 for 1080p and you could play on high

i love both of mine

I'm not dropping $200 for the sake of playing one game!

I'm waiting it out for an affordable DX11 card and some new games that push the envelope.

Another option is to wait until the ATI 5000 series comes out and buy a used 4890 that someone is selling to upgrade.

it is not my fault you only play one game

i know that your GTS cannot play ANY dx10 games at even 'medium' at 1080p - nevermind any filtering

If the op is serious about getting a new card that is affordable yet wields some brawn then the 4890 is the way to go right now.

Please tell me about these DX10 games that I am missing. Please only tell me about ones that actually look significantly better under DX10.

I don't understand people paying their hard earned $$$ so they can play poorly coded games on a poorly coded build of DX for the sake of a *tiny* bit of eye candy.

Play games have fun.

4890 is AWESOME bang for buck at only $200 and [at least] TWICE faster than the one he has

. .. what do you think his CPU will do with a much faster videocard anyway?; and the only thing that is sure is that 5890 is not $200

Two things.

1) 4890 is not at least twice as fast as an 8800GT. I know this because 8800GT SLI (which technically isn't twice as strong as a single 8800 due to non 100% scaling) is roughly equal to GTX285 which pretty much always outperforms 4890 (exceptions typically being games which are known to fare better on ATI hardware than nvidia)

2) Op, you should save your money (for now). You said yourself that your current card is plenty for the games you play now, so theres not really anything to be gained. Wait until you start playing a game that your 8800 doesn't play as well as you like, then upgrade. By then ATI's 4xxx series price cuts will be in effect and you can save some money. I know you're jonesing to upgrade now, but buying a 4890 now is kind of like paying $5 today to get a burger on saturday, when on saturdays burgers only cost $3.50

It is more than twice as fast as Sick Beast's 8800GTS-320MB
- i know because my 2900XT is faster than his card and 2900XT CrossFire is about 10% slower than a single 4870/512MB

Hellgate London was the only game i playedthat RAN faster than DX9C and LOOKED WAY better
- that was an amazing feat; so i know it can be done

actually, most of the newer games look better in DX10 than in DX9c
- Crysis [], Warhead, Stalker Clear Sky, Far Cry 2, WiC, Age of Conan, Call of Juarez, HAWX,
.. Cryostasis
and maybe BioShock

but you wouldn't know

Wow. Ok.

For Crysis and Crysis Warhead, most people run them in DX9 mode even if they have a card like the 4890 in order to get more performance.

TBH the rest of the games you have listed either suck or will actually run ok under DX10 with my card (BioShock, Call of Juarez).

Really if I'm stuck I can run games at 720P resolution on my HDTV and there's not that much quality loss. I just prefer to turn the settings down to medium and run in DX9 mode so I can get them at 1080P.

You should also keep in mind that I'm running an Opteron 165 overclocked to 2.6ghz. It's on its last legs. I need an entire computer. I'm waiting it out until my system is on its death bed.

Hot deals has them for $149 after a few MiRs and cash back hoops to get through

i get it - you have to upgrade it all [although i DO think a 4890 would give you almost DOUBLE the graphics horsepower with your current CPU; you can always use 4890 in your next build also]

You have to understand why some of us DO prefer DX10 and fast graphics
- i just could not go back to medium/DX9C

TBH the big issue for me is that there are no good games out for the PC right now that I want to play. It seems like games have plateaued since the Xbox 360 and the PS3 came out in terms of graphics. Sure the 4890 could run games I have already played much faster, but what's the point?

I'm waiting. My system is pretty balanced right now. I'm not a big fan of bottlenecks. I might even go with a next-gen console. :Q

I saw a pretty big improvement by upgrading from a 8800gt to a 4890, in some games it was 2x as fast. But I'm playing at 1920x1200 rez, if you're using a lower rez then you might not notice as much difference, especially if you're happy with the way your 8800gt performs now.

Im gaming at 1900 x 1200, so I think it may be worth it, esp. if my next build I can use the card again. ( not sure when thatll be but Im thinking sometime next summer )

for the most part its fine but there will be a 2 or 3 games that will easily exceed the 512mb at 1920 with the right settings. ATI seems to manage its memory a little more efficiently than Nvidia too.
