i have a geforce 2 ultra right now that i got about a year and a half ago, i was wondering it it is worth upgrading to a gf4 (4400 or 4600). Is there enough of a performance gain? or should i just be content with this card ;p any input is appreciated thanx.

A GF3 Ti200 is half the price and would last a person through this year. I would get it and wait for GF4 4400/4600 to come down in price alot or untill GF5(or whatever the name) comes toward the end of the year. Or you could wait for the GF4 4200 to come in a month or so for about $200.

I also have a year old Geforce 2 Ultra and I have stuck to 1024x768x32 and it plays everything perfectly smooth. Medal Of Honor, Wolfenstein etc. So, unless I wanted 1600x1200 in these games or FSAA turned on then I could safely stick with this card for a few more months yet. Looking to replace it quite soon though, just because I haven't upgraded in a year

If it's doing what you want now, don't upgrade. If not, then upgrade. Don't do it unless you can't do something you want to do, there's no use in preparing for the future because by the time you need it, there will be something better out and it will cost alot less.

thanks for the input guys i appreciate it. All i really play is counter-strike (which really wont matter), q3, moh, ss2, and warcraft3. but i havent upgraded in a while so i was thinking if it was worth the performance difference between teh two cards. A friend of mine told me that i should wait since with my computer i should be able to handle just about any game that comes out pretty well (1024x768@32) and i'm begining to think he's right. very few games actually tax my system (SS2 w/ everything on full and 16x12 / Q3 everything on full and 16x12). i guess i'll wait for gf5 to come out and then get the gf4 4600.

You'll see a massive performance difference between a GF2 Ultra and a Ti4600 if you like cranking up the detail levels in modern games.

It depends on the games you are using or planning to use and resolution, nobody will argue and say you won`t notice a speed difference with a GF4 but the fact is do you need to upgrade at this time? I still have a GF2 Ti and have the money for a GF4 but have decided to wait a little longer being the games I play and resolution(normally 1152x864) are doing fine for me at the moment.

You will always get people that upgrade every 5 minutes and say yes it`s worth it,but my opinion is use some common sense & ask questions like "do I need to upgrade right now,are my games suffering big performance hit due to my current graphics card I`m using ?" ,you should know the answer.

We all play different type of games in different systems in different resolutions so only you can really answer your question.

Here is what I did, and for the money I think it was a good choice.

I am running a older Geforce II MX 32mb card and wanted a new card, but thought the Geforce 4's were a bit much.

So I got a Ganward Geforce 3 TI 200 with 128mb ram. Yes thats 128mb on a Geforce 3, go check out the review over at hardocp.com.

It was $182 shipped from newegg. The great part about this card is that it will overclock to over a TI500.

For the money I think it is a great deal. You can also pickup a 64mb version of the same card for $152 shipped from newegg.

Good luck,
Kyle

if u have the means i highly recommend u getting a ti 4600... its soooo choice. your ultra will be able to run games smoothly BUT can it run smoothly with ALL the detail/settings on HIGH? i think not. therefore the clear choice is to go with a ti 4600, again that is only if u have the means.

I HIGHLY agree with this. My friend has a T-bird 900 and a GF2. He upgraded to a GF3 Ti200 and overclocked it to Ti500 speeds. WOW he saw a really huge difference (and this was on a system where the CPU is a huge bottleneck).

However, if you have tons of money. You should invest in a Ti4600. Why? Here's an excerpt from this month's PCGamer:

<< Most of the speed increase over GeForce Ti 500 shows itself at very high resolutions and with antialiasing trned on. On a 2GHz P4, GF3 Ti 500 pulls 56.2 fps in Quake III with quincunx AA enabled. GeForce4 Ti4600 notches an amazing 128.3 fps on the same system in the same test! >>

That fookin blew me away while I was reading it in the toilet last week. Of course, you won't pull 128fps with everything ultra high w/ a GF4 on your system, but it should still be damn good compared to your GF2.
