Upgrading CPU question

Hi everyone - I have a bit of a newbie question that I need help on.

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU. I have an Athlon 2100 running on a KT333 motherboard, and I'm planning on moving to an Athlon 2700 or 2800. The only problem is that my memory, all 1GB of it, is only DDR266. Will I still notice a performance gain using this memory with a new processor? Could there be a compatibility problem?

I've been scouring the internet to find the answer to this to no avail, but if it's the case that I'll need to buy new memory to go with the processor then I won't be able to afford the upgrade just yet...

Yeah, I guess, but I'm getting some choppy framerates in Rallisport and NOLF 2. I'm using a Radeon 9700 Pro, too, so it's not the graphics card.

dude. you got that on 2024x2024 or something. as far as i know the 266 fsb goes up to atholon xp 2600. so the gain from faster ram will be very little. with the 2700 and 2800 you will see a proformance gain with 333 ram. however still not to big from 266 ram. so its not really worth it unless you have way to much money. which you seem to have. so go for it.

If you have a 2100+, 1GB of RAM, and a 9700 Pro and you're getting choppy framerates in ANY game, than there's something wrong with your computer that a new CPU won't help. Start looking at configuration settings, driver issues, etc.

To be honest, I thought I should be getting perfect performance in all games too. That's why I was planning a cpu upgrade. I only really seem to suffer with choppy framerates in UT2003, Rallisport, and Morrowind (though everyone gets bad framerates in the latter).

I've reinstalled Windows XP, updated all my drivers, and my mobo bios. I've made sure nothing extra loads in startup too. I just don't get it. My system specs are:

Athlon XP 2100
Gigabyte something or other RXP KT333 mobo
1GB PC2100 DDR
4 x Seagate Barracude 7200rpm HDs
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
Audigy 2 Platinum
Radeon 9700 Pro

I get like 11000 3d marks, which I guess is respectable enough, but the nagging framerate thing really gets to me. All I can think of at this point is that my CPU is flagging.

you dont have rather a lot of files on those 4 hdd's, possibly causing rather a lot of file indexing to be happening?
gaming machines should turn things like file indexing off
