Upgrading... need advice

WARNING: This is fairly long, but I have some great questions I'd love answered.

My parents have been quite generous since they moved out of state, and I'm pretty sure they want to buy me some computer gadgets for xmas so I can rebuild my computer.

I made a new rig in January. At the time, it was awesome. Opty 146 (OC to 2.8ghz stable and cool), Epox 9npa+sli, XFX 7900GT, 2x1gb DDR400 Corsair XMS at really tight timings (2-3-2-6). But it's starting to show its age - especially with the processor not being dual core. Lots of games in 2007 will require dual core processors, so I figure it's time.

I plan to only upgrade my mobo, processor, and memory (questions about vid board later). My HDDs are good, optical drive is good, PSU is good, everything else is good.

I'm an EPoX fanboy. I *love* their boards. I've owned two and I'm in love. This'll be an upgrade from 939 to AM2. Lil question though - is there a comparable board in quality and price that does 16x16 SLI? Anything but DFI. I've had nothing but nightmares with DFI boads.

For processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103751
I'd love for it to be insanely overclockable (25% gain at minimum). I have good coolers. Both a Scythe Ninja with a Silverstone fan that spins so fast it creates antimatter, and a Thermalright SI-120 with the same fan. I alternate them depending on the season. It's cold inside now, so I'm using the SI-120. I can get my Opty 146 to 2.8ghz from 2.0 (3.1ghz was my tops, but I was uncomfortable pushing it that hard, tho it was stable over 3 days of prime95 torture). Stable as all hell just on air cooling, using either cooler. I'd prefer to get an AM2 dual core Opty, but they're insanely spendy. Think I chose a good alternative?

Why am I not going Core Duo? Not impressed. Sure, it's great tech, but AMD has served me quite well for nearly 10 years and I don't plan on ditching them. The new Intel stuff is also way overpriced for what it is. And hey, I like to support the small guys. And my last Intel overheated (with a nice Zalman cooler on max speed, no less) every 15 minutes. Also, the SLI Core 2 Duo boards cost about $45,000 currently.

What about memory? I haven't kept track of memory quality lately. I'll have to replace my DDR 400 with DDR2 800. 2x1gb sticks. Something quality, not too pricey, and with easily tweakable timings. Good OC performance wouldn't hurt a bit either.

As far as video cards... would you recommend I SLI my 7900GT (which are becoming nearly impossible to find lately... ugh), upgrade to 1 superclocked 7950GT, or bite the overpriced 8800GTS bullet? I'm happy as hell with my current card, but over 2007, it's gonna age quite quickly. Any clues when the 8800 cards will drop in price? Assuming it'll be when nvidia upgrades the 8800s like they did the 7900s. But no telling when.

That's pretty much it. I'd appreciate any feedback. Researching new hardware is always quite the debacle.

well I understand your your hesitance in switching to a C2D system, 8 years ago I refused to by anything intel anymore but the C2D out preforms the X2, AMD is no longer the small guy before the C2D they were the market leader for the last two years, they had the first 64bit chip, SLi boards do not cost 45k although I think that was a typo other than the ASUS striker they cost around 250 and the price will come down after christmas, the big typhoon is the best cooler on the market, I know nothing about EPox but it looks like a good board and a decent set up, AM2 is a good processor, bite the bullet and get an 8800, it is droping in price anyways if you wait till the first of the year it should be lower in price they already dropping in price the GTS has lowered by 30 dollars

The $45,000 was just a joke. I've just never spent more than about $150 on a mobo (and that gets you a DAMN nice mobo), so when I saw the SLI C2D boards going for $250 I was boggled and a bit sickened.

I'd seriously give C2D a try if the boards weren't so damned expensive. I'd be willing to pay $200. I'd balk, but I'd eventually do it. Been looking at C2D benchies and they're pretty fast. I just don't wanna clean out mom and dad's pockets. They're being generous as it is.

Never tried the Typhoon, but the two coolers I have are absolutely amazing and I believe both of them will fit on AM2, and the Ninja should fit on C2D.

I'll keep an eye on the C2D mobos for a month or so... see how the prices go. If they don't drop by mid-January, I'm going AMD. Slower or not, I've always had awesome experiences with AMD processors. And you can overclock them like mad without them breaking a sweat!

I think I will go with the 8800GTS. Also been looking at benchies for that, and nothing beats it for the price. Or comes even marginally close. When the price drops, I can SLI them and... whoa. I'm sure I could hawk my 7900GT on craigslist or such for a good price to make up for the cost of the 8800GTS. I spent $400 on a 6800GT the day it came out, so $400 on a video card doesn't phase me.

And with all this neat stuff, a new PSU. Mine will more than suffice with a C2D or AMD x2 and an 8800GTS (Enermax Liberty 500W), but I think I'll futureproof by getting a new PSU. The PCP&C 750W looks super nice and it's very reasonably priced. Mmm!

Few further questions...

1) anyone have a list of C2D SLI boards currently on the market? Or ones that're coming to the market very soon?

2) still looking for memory suggestions. It's been so long since I've bought any that I'm completely clueless.

3) any newcomers to the mobo market that I should give a look? EPoX has been my fav for a while, I like MSI, and I despise DFI. But maybe something else has come out recently that I should take a look at? like I said before, I'd really like a reasonably-priced board that's able to run SLI in 16x16 rather than the standard 8x8.

Thanks!

an typhoon would fit on a C2D as well, I know all the 680 SLi boards if you want to know I would get the 750 quad, PCP&P sells it for the same price newegg sells the normal 750 silencer, as for memory patriot and super talent would be good, the GTS will amaze you, I am going with a GTX to eventually go with two GTXs in SLi,
