My friend wants to put a faster processor in his pavillion. I think he could go to 1 ghz but this is what HP sent him. It doesn't make sense to me.

The motherboard of your HP Pavilion 8674D has been configured to support

The processor shipped with your HP Pavilion 8674D is the 600 MHz Intel

It's a VIA 694X chipset.

Here's a link to his specs:

It's only a 100mhz FSB board, so therefore the fastest you can put in there is the 866mhz w/ 100 FSB

No matter 866MHZ or 1GHZ, it doesn't worth to upgrade.
The Intel CPU is always not cheap even it is already outdated.
Of course if you can buy a cheap second hand CPU that's another story.

866 only come in 133FSB flavors. They probably set that limit because 1) they dont test it above 866Mhz (therefore its not certified) 2) the case system is not equipped to dissipate heat of higher powered procs 3) motherboard's physical limitation, like some i840 boards wont go above 933.

I have 2 HP Pavilion 8670's. I have the original motherboards. It's Asus P2B-VT motherboards. Mine both came with P3 600 EB(CuMine core 133 FSB). Seems yours comes with 600 (Katmai core and 100 FSB) The highest I would recommend is a 800 SLOT 1.

Or you can do what I did before getting a Asus P3CL and Soyo TUSI
Buy a Power Leap Slot 1 Adapter. Get a Celeron 1.4 from Newegg.com
Its simple man, it works. I've tried it on the motherboard. Don't waste more mone on the P3 than you have to.

It's actually an 667 he has in there. I guess those specs are not exactly right. I saw the motherboard awhile back, I think it's some form of an Asus CUV that has been configured for hp. I know what you're saying about not spending too much on the processor, but he really just wants to get up to a gig and he could do that for less than $100. He wouldn't have to buy a new case and redo the OS and such. It is a socket 370 and it appears the chipset would handle it. dexvx, what you said makes sense, thanks. paralazarguer, I don't understand with that chipset why he can only go to 866 and not 1 gig. I also found something on an HP board. It seems someone was speculating HP was putting PC100 memory chips in 133 fsb boards just to get rid of old stock. The specs also call for a maximum of 384 megs of ram. He's got 512 in it. I personally think he could pop a 1 gig chip in there with no problem, but I hate to have him spend his money and it not work out.

You could always try a socket 370 adapter. Pop in a Tualatin Celeron, and you got yourself something better than a Coppermine at a higher clock speed, and cheaper. Compatability could be a potential problem, so I'd look on powerleap's website. Otherwise, since its based on the VIA694X chipset, it should follow all the rules that a VIA694X follows.

Mine boots up as a Pentium II 1333 :Q

That's not a bad idea dexvx, I may suggest that. It should work, but with HP it seems all bets are off. They have a unique way of doing things.
