Hello All

I'm about to upgrade to Outlook 2010 and hoping someone might have some advice.

I'm currently using Outlook 2007, and have it all configured up with multiple email accounts, PST files, and other things. What is the best convenient and safe way to port my settings over to the new installation of Office 2010?

Does Office 2010 install cleanly without uninstalling Office 2007 first?

Things I need to migrate over:
*email account settings
*macros
*Data File Settings (all of my pointers to .pst file). Plus need to sure my .pst files won't be erased.

Am I supposed to use the Office Customization Tool? If so, this doesn't exist on my machine until I install Office 2010, and doing this installation deletes all the Office 2007 stuff right? So... if I run OCT then, it will be too late because Office 2007 stuff already erased... am I missing something? how to solve?

Many thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Are you going to upgrade to all Office 2010 apps or just Outlook?

First you need to backup your pst file/files. YOu can find them here:
C: \Users\*YOURNAME*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
When you have Outlook 2010 installed you can import mail and stuff or you ca just overwrite your new and empty pst file which can be found here:
C: \Users\*YOURNAME*\Documents\Outlook files; Note that Outlook 2010 keeps the pst file in this new location.

About the email account settings, macros and Data file settings i think you will need to set up manually. I am not familiar with possibly existing migration tools.

Everything pretty much 'just worked' when I did an in-place upgrade. I have my own Exchange cluster however and don't work off PST's, so YMMV.

Personally before doing anything major, I just take a backup using Acronis. Any issues, I blow away the flawed install and put a 'known good' backup back on, or to the same with WHS.

An in-place upgrade worked fine here and it didn't delete any of my PSTs but like vbuggy I'm using it in an Exchange environment. IIRC it did want to scan my PSTs first before I could use them, which sucked. And Outlook 2010 seems overall slower and I hate the ribbon so I can't really recommend it.

I freakin' love it. The contact features, the integration with the suite, the everything. I don't mind the ribbon cuz I don't mind spending a few minutes getting used to something new. I also don't use crud (well, apart from the Apples I have to use - but they have 2008), so it doesn't seem slow to me at all.

I don't use any of that shit, I just want a f'ign email client. The laptop I'm using is a bit older but it isn't "crud" and Outlook 2010 is noticeably slower than 07 was, even popping up a new mail message cause it to churn occasionally. The whole thing just seems like a step backwards for me.

News for ya. If all you need is an email client then you can go IMAP.

And I have mutt setup on my main machine, but do still occasionally need the calendar stuff too. Office is a necessary evil that I've just become used to needing and I consider 2010 more evil than 2007 which was helluva lot more evil than 2003.

It's possible the effect is exacerbated by the slower hard disk in my notebook or that my annoyance is just misdirected. However after having used Office 2010 for a few weeks now I'm convinced it's just yet another unnecessary upgrade. The ribbon-isation of Outlook makes it consistent with the rest of Office, but I think the thing is terrible so now they just brought Outlook down with the rest of the suite and now I have to click "Enable Editing" whenever I open a spreadsheet via email, yay...

You may be right but i think for outlook alone it was worth the upgrade. There are a lot of features in the other programs i don't use, but i thought outlook was quite a good improvement.
