urgent - cdrom help please

i just built my new machine....

1.2 gig w/ 266 fsb - 640 MB pc133 ram (micron) - FOP38 with artic silver
45 gig ibm deskstar 75gxp
plextor 12/10/32
pioneer 16x slot loading dvd
abit kt7a motherboard
soundblaster live x-gamer 5.1
linksys 10/100 ethernet card
firegl 8mb (a filler card, until i buy the geforce3)

i have the following setup:
primary master - ibm 45 gig
primary slave - plextor 12/10/32
secondary master - pioneer 16x dvd
secondary slave - none

the hard drive is detected along with the floppy, however, both cd drives are not detected at all
any ideas or suggestions?

they are jumpered correctly?

in the bios u have the ide primary and secondary set to auto detect?

you have the secondary IDE port enabled?

you using a ATA-66 cable with an ATA-33 cdrom? (ie burner and dvd)

does it find them on bootup?

Yes address all of his questions. Have a interface plugged in wrong? Make sure they are getting power and the secondary channel is on and the jumps are right on your drives

Oh and.. why buy a Geforce 3? Too expensive .. theres cheaper alternatives out there...

That Plextor drive you have... isnt that SCSI?

woops - i spoke too soon


auto detect was off, now they are detected on boot up...
they are jumpered correctly

since everything is new i still need to install an os...already did fdisk and format...

when i start computer with cdrom support, it does not load cd-rom driver - it says no cd device found

once again, any ideas?

also to answer your questions

secondary ide port is enabled, i checked
the cables and drives are compatable...

they are ide devices, not scsi

ok
i always though that the standard drive leter for a cd drive is D:

guess not
just tried F:setup
its now installing os

thanks for all your help, and this is a great example of how lack of slack is bad for building a computer - lol
