URGENT: Dead Harddrive?

The computer was running fine--then the harddrive began to click and whine. The computer froze so I tried a restart. Now the harddrive can no longer be detected by the bios. Fails to work in other systems as well. Seems like a dead drive to me.

Now is there a way to recover the data without sending it out to a recovery center?

your only option is to send it to a rewcovery center. Though place HD in freezer i hear can help revive it long enought to copy stuff of it. But that is what i hear.

Does your computer make error beeps?

The last 2 computers that I've seen this happen to, I turned the computer on, let it boot as much as it can, then get an error message. I would turn it off and repeat...I don't know why, but after 4 - 5 tries it worked fine. One of those computers running fine right now with the same drive. No rational, but I don't think you've got much to lose. Good luck.

Not likely...I have gotten lucky on a few drives and keep rebooting the computer and the HD started working again.

I immeadiately moved the data but I have to say i was extremely lucky there.

No error beeps in the beginning--just grinds and clicks from the harddrive. ;(

Guess all I can do is freeze it and pray to God.

Dang...data recovery is 'spensive.

Grinding noise usually indicates a bad sector....the hardware itself is should be easily be repairable by basically doing a clean format. i'm not sure about data recovery. There must be something out there that lets you bypass the bad sectors.

If the bios won't even detect it how do you format it?
