Regarding the security failures it would seem the top brass of the Capitol Police are not long for their jobs. I think it is inevitable that the building and campus will undergo major physical security upgrades and public access could be dramatically curtailed. It looks like they got in the building initially through regular windows then opened exterior doors for others. There has historically been a lot of interest in not altering too many aspects of the building's exterior but maybe invest in some reproduction windows made out of steel and thick ballistic glass.
I really don't see the problem with the police PRESUMING the police were actively emphasizing calling for extreme reinforcements.
I mean, they held the line for.... what? The first hour or 2 hours in that whole 6-8 hour debacle?
Full forces in shields + helmets + assault rifles should have been there in IDEALLY < 10 minutes - but full stop < 20 minutes. Period.
