Guessing the shooter was secret service (edit: assuming VP was back there), which appeared to be the only security taking their jobs seriously yesterday. At least until the national guard was finally released from the nearby staging area - much later that is.

If he was secret service he'll be fine.
I was bored one day and looked it up, those guys have a shocking amount of leeway in regards to shooting, and loads of legal protection.

They could only do anything at orders or Sec Def and Sec Def was not answering calls yesterday. Then there was no plan or efforts to secure the Capitol. Then you have a lack of law enforcement response to an active crime for hours. There’s 15000+ federal and local law enforcement and nothing was mobilized for hours. They could have had a force several thousand strong in tactical gear on the scene in minutes. But again it took hours. Then they don’t even bother to make arrests.

This doesn’t even get into evidence of some law enforcement aiding and abetting the traitors.

i'm not going to disagree with any of that, but the holocaust comparison is going to far, and not at all realistic. How about the Battle of Little Bighorn or the Las Vegas shooting?

There really was no strategy here. Trump incited a mob, and pointed that mob at the lawmakers.

No one can really understand the warped mind of Trump. He probably thought a show of force might sway lawmakers or delay the results. This was not some kind of mastermind move. It was a continuing tantrum from a loser, who has the mentality of a spoiled child.

As far as the Mob's goals, they will be varied. Some are just delusional supporters caught up in the moment, that wanted to be part of something. Some were Qanon wackos. Some were paramilitaries carrying hostage kits (yikes!).
