Are the VIA chipsets all that undesirable ? (this one has one) rather than then NEC chipsets.

Also, separately, but quite important, have you found that motherboards aligned with USB 1.1 will accept USB 2.0 easily enough ? ( I hope they do) , such as the venerable IWILL KK266 MB ?

Cannot say about the particular motherboard in question but i have used my USB 2.0 flash drive with a lot of old USB 1.1 systems without a hitch.

Thanks,
I wrote that in that I have seen postings saying that one should only go for NEC chipset USB 2.0 cards. Several chips on the MB in topic, above, are VIA chips. I will have to research as to how or if the USB 2.0 card will actually take over the USB functioning, when it is used. Obviously, this is the difference between a smart card or a pass through card.
But come to think of it, all of these 2.0 cards would have to have full "take over" functions, or they would not or could not work. I am meandering here, but do invite responses....

Good price, but as an owner of a mobo with a Via KT400/8235 chipset with integrated USB 2.0, I have to say that it does indeed have some problems. It works, but not in Win9x, and some USB2.0 devices seem to have some issues. Also, the USB 1.1 support is provided by a PIO-mode interface, whereas only the USB 2.0 is DMA-driven. I don't know if it's the same way with the discrete chipset on the add-on cards, but it tends to cause the USB mouse to lag badly when the CPU is totally maxed out.

currently posting from a IWILL KK266-R with a USB 2.0 card. didn't have to disable the onboard or anything. coincidently about a week after installing i tripped over by keyboard and tore the onboard usb apart.

I picked up this card a while back the last time this deal was posted on AT. Great card. Even works with Linspire (Linux OS distro). It comes with an internal USB jack and header pins. I think you can only use one or the other.

chiragp, you are right that your USB 2.0 flash drive is backward-compatible with USB 1.1, but I don't think that had much to do with Jerry's question. I have an IWILL XP333-R mobo which is basically just an upgraded KK266. (An XP333-R sticker was just put over the KK266 stamp.) The KK266 was IWILL's leading motherboard due to its extreme stability when overclocking.

Anyway, most motherboards have USB 1.1 jacks in the back and USB 2.0 header pins on the board that connect to the optional jacks in the front of your case. USB 2.0 is completely backwards compatible. The USB specs are set by your controller chip. The VIA card that is linked for this deal has its own USB controller chip that directly interfaces with your PCI bus. So a motherboard's possible USB limitations wouldn't matter.

Thanks foolish501, I'll take my chances with that company. Last time I ordered from 4linkcomm, it took them 10 days to ship my order out.

I ordered one from them months backs and a slight problem with my address caused them to cancel my order. I called them and they shipeed that day and I got it faster than I ever get anything from newegg. Although Newegg rocks, this retailer will get my business again if the need arises.

use coupon code. "uss-25"

Thanks, ordered one from them, came extremely fast (3days)

Dropped it in an older box running XP Pro SP2, fully self-installed with no issues at all.

Going to order a couple of more - cheaper, neater and easier than adding USB hubs in my view.
