Could anyone recommend a decent usb scanner with an auto document feeder for less than AU$1,500?

There doesnt seem to be much choice around other than the following:

HP 7450C - I have one of these currently and it's VERY VERY VERRY noisy when scanning @ 200dpi and upwards. A disappointing unit considering the near $1,500 price tag. The scanning software is an embarrasment compared with Canon.

HP 5550C - Looks like it could be a little slow @ only up to 8ppm. About AU$800, but after the disappointing form of the 7450C I dont know if I want to risk HP again.

All of Canons scanners that have auto document feeders seem to be SCSI and astronomically priced. Are there any others out there???

High speed production scanners are SCSI for a reason. It won't need a top-end card so a card should be very inexpensive.

Epson makes a model that is around $500US. It's the 1640SU - you want the *office* modelwhich comes with and document feeder. They make nice stuff and support many platforms. It has a USB and SCSI interface. If you're doing any sort of scanning in volume or want to use the system while scanning I'd highly reccomend the SCSI card.

thanks for the epson tip. that model is very difficult to get in my neck of the woods but i'll keep looking.

I just wish canon would make some reasonably priced scanners with auto doc feeders and usb connectivity.

Doesn't any All-in-one machine do it for you?

thanks for the offer. unfortunately these scanners will be for work so i'd need 4 and am restricted to purchasing through specific channels which can be a BIG annoying time waster but thems the rules.

if theres a usb all-in-one with an auto doc feeder for under AU$1,500 i'd look at it. I havent found one but i could have missed them.

At this point it looks like i'll have to stick with the HPs.

Oh I thought it was for you. You're welcome to it for the cost of shipping. But I'm not interested in donating to a business.

You need something a bit tougher it sounds. I assume this is for document management. If you like Canon (I'm partial to Epson or Canon over HP for everything but laser printers) check out the DR-2080C. It sounds perfect, except it's SCSI. But it comes with a card and a cable. For a high speed scanner the USB requirement is... odd. It's inexpensive($800USD), fast(20ppm), and relatively compact. You're gonna be the office hero!

I don't know where the USB requirement is coming from but it seems misplaced. USB is what people use at home to scan pictures of the kids. For production scanners you use FireWire or SCSI. If you require PNP then consider FireWire. Why USB? Is it just a case of somebody not knowing the tech?

Here's the Canon AU page: <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.canon.com.au/products/business/scanners/scanners_high_volume.html
">http://www.canon.com.au/products/business/scanners/scanners_high_volume.html</a>

Fujitsu and Panasonic also make business class document scanners. The Epson stuff is more graphics oriented.
