Won't this run really slow?? I mean SCSI to USB? I would guess the performance would be pretty weak right?

would only be worth it if it was USB 2.0. WHats the point of a 12MB/sec SCSI connection? ...unless you had an old SCSI device and and don't run SCSI anymore.

Great find Toshiba,
this could really come in handy for those who have old Macs and can't put in a USB card. Excellent price for what you get. I'll tell my Mac friends.

This is perfect for me, I don't have SCSI on my new machine and only have a SCSI pcmcia card for my laptop, so whenever I had to scan something with my SCSI scanner I had to do it on my lappie.

I don't care about the speed I just need the convenience.

BTW...shipping came out to be $7.00!!! :Q

Assuming this can in fact use the whole 12MB/sec USB bandwidth, 12MB/sec is roughly equivalent to 40XCDRW...
I for example have an external 16X Sanyo CDRW along with External SCSI Pioneer DVD-Rom.....
Itd be nice to use this USB device and get rid of my obsolete SCSI PCI card.... Then again, i wont be able to boot off it

Nice Post! I can think of many uses for it (external devices with laptop, free-up a scsi id, external scsi to pcmcia) and it's only $8.

Watch out here, guys. I have one of these I PLANNED on using with my Canon SCSI scanner. I won't work. If you have a Zip or Jaz drive, you are probably Ok, but not all scanners will work. I learned later there is a "compatability list" on the Intel site. My scanner did not make the list:disgust:.

WARNING - Intel Support is suck on discontinued Xircom devices.

I bought this 2 weeks ago after I found my ZIP 250 SCSI drive was on the compatability list. Brought it home and couldn't get it to work. Called Intel Tech support to see if the tested configuration was using the same drivers as me. Only person that would talk to me was the "call director" (the person that normally takes your name and phone number). She said that since this product was discontinued *without support* after the Intel/Xircom "merger", the only avenue that I had for tech support was the canned pages on the Intel Tech Support web site. The only other option was to "swap it out" with S&H at _my_ expense.

WTF! I bought this because the Web site listed my ZIP drive on the compatability list. Nowhere can I find the configuration it was tested in. Upgraded to all the latest drivers and still no go. Tried it on my XP and 9x systems to boot with no luck.

Buyer beware. This item is "wierd" enough that it is possible that you will only be able to use it as a doorstop.

I have this adapter, new was like $75
Works fine in W2K and WinXp with W2K driver.

Scsi connector 25 pin only!!! not 50 pin, no adapter.
Works with scanner Umax 600S in W2K, but scanner does not work in WinXP.
Detect as SCSI adapter by Adaptec EZSCSI.

I had bought one a couple weeks ago but can not get the win2k drivers to work on my XP box and of course there are not XP drivers that I can find anywhere. hmppph

Like someone said above...I just need it for convenience, if I am doing anything serious I will scan it at work.

O wait that is freaking a crap...... according to the compatibility list mine is one of the 6 scanners it won't work on. Nice : (

USB is 12 megaBITS per second, not megabytes. 12 Mb/s is only 1.5 MB/s, which is about the same as a 10X CD-ROM.

Well, I think I figured out my problem. Seems that these don't provide power on the SCSI termination power lead. As such devices like ZIP 250s which expect to use the termination power lead don't have any power on their termination network even though it is "switched in". Seems the only solution is to use a powered SCSI terminator.

Hope this information saves someone the grief I have been going through trying to get this to work.

Now to find a hot deal on a powered SCSI terminator...

I have also having a problem using this thing like sadlerjon, although, being busy with other things, I have not spent much time figuring it out. I have also suspected the termination was the problem but have not done anything to solve the problem.

So far, I have connected SCSI Zip & Jaz, SCSI CD-ROM, and SCSI harddrive, and none of them worked. If someone figures this out, let us know.

Thanks. Ordered 2. I've been wanting one for a long time. This should work great for my 4x SCSI burner to make it portable. If not, oh well.

Bought this almost two months ago, and then had to get another cable to use the 25-pin connector on this device. Another $5-7 for that, not a big deal. Had to get this since my new system at work no longer has external SCSI connections. Oh, running W2K Pro at work and the system instantly recognized this as "Portgear" something or another and also said this was a "Mass Storage Device", probably since I connected a external CDRW to it. Little green light wouldn't stay lit on the adaptor, computer didn't see this newly attached drive. Fumbled around with drivers on the provided CD, uninstalled the drivers, etc. Nothing worked, chucked the adaptor into my drawer. Decided to try again a week later. Attached the CDRW, plugged it into the USB port, installed the drivers from the CD again, worked like a charm. WTF?

I can't explain how I got it to work, or even why it started working. But my co-workers are happy since they are getting free CD burns from me.

I have a ZIP100 SCSI still in shrink-wrap 'cause I never bought a SCSI card for my computer. Should I invest in this so I might actually use my SCSI Zip drive or should I think about getting a SCSI card?

~ DaCurryman

Edit: Since this is a 25-pin and not a 50-pin, do I need a convertor or is my Zip drive 25-pin. (I would look, but it's still packaged )
