User-modifiable DNS?

I'd like to register my domain and host my DNS with a company that gives you the most flexibility as far as modifying the DNS yourself. For example, editting the MX record, creating a subdomain (like parts.computers.com or whatever), etc.

I know register.com gives you this functionality, but they don't seem to be the quickest in the world as far as applying changes goes.

I see that Network Solutions seems to offer this as well, but for an extra monthly fee.

Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with this aspect of registering your domain and them hosting your DNS?

Subdomains have nothing to do with the company you register with, that's up to your host.

Godaddy.com is the cheapest around and also the best, imo. I host with eryxma.com and they've been great as well.

Concerning TLD. You submit the change in DNS to your Registrar, but the actual Propagation on the Internet is not really a function of the Registrar.

It takes from few hours to 48 hours, and luck is the major variable.

Yeah, to second the thing about propagation, when I swapped hosts about a year ago some people were able to reach my new site after about 15 minutes, some people couldn't get to it for more than a day.

Correct. Specifically, it has to do with your DNS host. But, Register.com will host your DNS when you register through them, which allows you to host your own email and/or web servers without paying a host.

I'm aware of the delay in propogation. However, Register.com doesn't seem to be applying DNS changes immediately. Maybe they apply changes once per day or something - I don't know.

I was hoping to get some info from people familiar with different registrars that will also host your DNS.

I think dyndns.org also offers DNS hosting of top level domains. I know they allow you to setup your own MX reslover records.

Without a doubt Zoneedit.com is the way to go. Not only are they free, they offer almost every option there is. Just for mail for instance, you can modify the MX record or do a mailforard to your existing email address. They let you modify subdomains. The best thing about this site is that they give you details on each option and even show you examples. So if you're new to this stuff - you'll find it really helpful.

What is making you think that Register.com only applies them once a day. The problem with DNS is that they could apply it he min you make the change, but it might not propogate to you for 2 days.
