Hi all

Don't flame, I'm moving to a high speed area in a week, and just grabbed a wireless 614 Dlink router for then, but I'm playing with it now with my dialup connection.

The situation..
Currently have 2 high end pcs connected via crossover, and one of them having the dialup connection in it.

The idea...
Now I figured all I had to do was unplug the crossover from the non-server pc and plug it into theWAN port, and run a straight through from the router to my other pc, thus making my server pc the gateway... sounds like it should work, eh?
Unfortunatly, it looks like the server and router are talking, and the other pc and router are talking, but I cant connect to the internet from the other pc.

Not too sure if something needs to be changed, but I made static ip's to eliminate DHCP issues. This pc is 192.168.0.1, and I set the router to use the gateway 192.168.0.1, and the router's LAN ip address is 192.168.0.5 (just incase this SOMEHOW, SOME WAY would interere with the server pc) I'm stumped and I've been networking for years, any ideas??

I take it the 56k modem is in the main system by reading your post. If so, all you got to do is enable ICS on the computer that has the modem and internet connection.

Then just use standard Cat5 cable and plug it in the router (Not the WAN port). After that just point the gateway on the 2nd system to the main system. All though doing it this way you wont have the firewall that is in the DLink router.

You could use Zone Alarm for now untell you move and get your highspeed internet.

I wanted, although stupid but I dont have a long enough straight through, is plug the dialup pc into the wan port to act like a cable modem and allow the router to go through it

I think Halfcrazy is right. You need to use ICS in order for your dialup PC to act as the NAT gateway. Just set your router to get its WAN IP address via DHCP, and the dialup PC running ICS will assign the router a private address. And since the D-link will most likely be setup to use NAT as well, any PC connected to its LAN network will be "double-NAT'ed." Make sense?
