Using VPN while abroad

Morning All,

I wish to get a VPN service while abroad for three weeks. I'm in the USA and traveling to the UK. Want a VPN provider that does no logging, unlimited bandwidth and has POPs in several locations in both countries.

I'll be using the service for personal use--nothing elicit or illegal (AFAIK) and I am OK with a paid for service provided it isn't too expensive and can be used by the month (no contract).

Anyone care to offer feedback on their personal experience in the above described conditions?

I use both my own OpenVPN via my router, and also CactusVPN.
I have been using CactusVPN for quite a while.

VPN.AC would be the best route as they can circumvent county blocks like the great wall of China. This is the VPN I'm going with as soon as PIA runs out. I gues VPN.AC does keep a one day bandwidth log, but I wouldn't worry about that. www.vpn.ac

For the "does no logging" part I'll recommend using www.vpnwise.com/smart-dns. It's also cheap for just $3.99 a month for VPN smart DNS Security package and $1.99 for an access for entertainment purposes. I'm subscribed to them for a week now and I'm happy, so far so good.

I am in China all the time and I use Astrill VPN. I think that they have some of the easiest software to use, installing on iOS devices is simple and their DD-WRT software is top notch.

I should have mentioned the need to have this working on iOS 8.1.x (iPhone 5, iPad Air 2).

Hi Michael, I heard that China already banned Astrill. Read lots of complaints that they can no longer connect using Astrill. Am I correct?

I am using ZenVPN, well as for no logging all VPN's claims that they dont keep logs. Just choose the VPN with best ratings and best feedback. But, for some known VPN w/ great feedback you may encounter problem browsing the net. Example: if you need to access craigslist the IP address of that known VPN provider has been tagged as spammer or banned. THat is why I got a VPN that is not so well known but has affordable plans.

I have no issues with Astrill in China in general. Astrill has IPSEC, L2TP and PPTP servers that work on the iPhone, no ap needed.

Sometimes the Chinese government goes on complete lockdown. They use deep packet inspection and there really is not much you can do with any VPN then.

Astrill has a GUI interface for DD-WRT routers and has a very easy system to install on iPhones - email with a link is sent and it installs up to 10 servers at once.

I am in China about 50% of the time and Astrill is my main VPN there. While in the USA, it lets me use my NHL Gamecenter subscription to change my location and watch pretty much any game (computer only).

VPN.AC has XOR encryption and can use TCP port 443 to mask that it looks like regular SSL traffic. I'm using it right now.

I used VPN.AC during my vacation in the UK. I used it on a pair of iPhones and a new iPad Air. A couple of times during usage I noticed a website I tried to get to (Barclay, Charles Schwab, etc.) directed me to doubleclick and another leechy website. During these incidents I checked dnsleaktest and they seem to come up correct, but I cannot help but wonder about the honest nature of things out there.

If you were using a WIFI connection you should use a set DNS setting in the network adapter as you can get DNS poisoning. I use OpenDNS.

BTW, I noticed even back at home some strangeness is taking place. I am in Atlanta and so I tried the Atlanta location and had no issues opening up Bing. Same for the London location. But when I chose the one for Canada, Bing's webpage would not open.

Interesting. I haven't used the Canadian servers at all. I mostly use Dallas. Have had no issues.

Traveling in China now. On Apple devices, Astrill has a fair number of servers being blocked but I can still find more that work. Witopia is working quite well.
