Uverse Router and adding 2nd router

I am building a new PC and giving my kids my old one and the room it will be upstairs is not wired.

So I was planning on getting another router. Probably dual band (is this necessary) to put on their desk and wire the PC from that.

Is there an issue with a router to a router? Only other wireless device I have on the wireless network is my work laptop when I work from home, other than that I have my BDP, TV, Denon AVR and Airport express all hard wired from my Uverse router. Oh will have a wireless printer in the mix soon too if that complicates anything

Any suggestions on how to setup and what type of router to get? Kids will only be using to surf the web.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is your U-verse router wireless?

Is there a reason why you can't install a wireless network card into the computer upstairs?

It has a wireless router built into the main unit.

I tried and PCI(e) card in the past and just did not have great success with range. Mind you that was years ago.

I know there is USB options as well, but just would not think they are as strong just due to size (maybe lame reasoning).

Thoughts on USB if they are viable? Plus PCIe the ugly antenna's are nice, but also I don't think will fit well with where my PC will be placed in cabinet.

i agree with her209. why not just get a new NIC. they can be had for $15-$20.

the only time a dual band router would be handy is if you live in a condo/apartment complex where the 2.4ghz spectrum is completely saturated. i had to get one because turning a microwave on, even if it wasn't me, my streams and wireless connections would just drop. they drop randomly or latency spikes and constant speed degradation. after i put a 5ghz AP in, it was smooth sailing

If you with a Router it is not a simple affair you need a Router that can be configured as Wireless Bridge which usually entails buying a DD-WRT compatible Router and flashing it with DD-WRT configuring it as a Wireless Bridge.

Routers are not necessarily better Wireless than PCI Wireless card. They bot have as Wireless the same Radios.

The main Difference is Antenna which is more flexibly poisoned than a Card's Antenna.

You can try to go with this PCI card.

Did not know about the wireless bridge thing.

I just want something that will get a good single and when/if both PC's are on the network there is no really degredation or drops on the wireless or main PC slow down.

Does this have good range? The reviews on Newegg seem positive, but did not read all It will be one floor up and opposite side of the house.

Is there a DD-WRT router out there you would recommend and is it easy to make into a wireless bridge?

if you already have a wireless router that reaches fine, i still say just buy a WLAN adapter. there's really no need for any type of bridging unless you have multiple hardwired connections you'll want wireless on next to that computer. for dd-wrt, just get a linksys wrt54gl. those *just work*. i had a wrt610n and it was complete garbage with dd-wrt. constant resets, wireless dropping, more resets, more wireless dropping.

Most enthusiasts are Not willing the accept the simple fact that Wireless has sever limitations, and many times it is Not a sound solution.

If the Edimax card mentioned above does not provide solid connection, it means that you need a much more sophisticated Wireless hardware and the cost will probably jump x10.

Alternatively, you log to Monoprice.com and buy cables and keystones, and take care of real Networking.

I am not advocating against Wireless. In matter of fact, I know Wireless just as well, or better than Wire based Network.

The problem is that users refuse to understand that Minicooper cannot replace a Bulldozer.

I'm guessing you mean to attempt to use router 2 as a client to connect to the Uverse via wireless. It doesn't work that way. You need a "Client Bridge".

Buffalo WHR-G54-HP has a switch on the bottom either - AP or "Client Bridge" mode. You log into it and associate teh buffalo with the Uverse, and anything connected to its ethernet ports is on the network. It's more expensive than a wireless NIC, but useful if there will be more than 1 PC at that loc.
