I just bought a new Vaio v505dxp and all was fine until I tried to make the 9 recovery disk required to fix the machine...just incase what happened next happened.
The system stopped responding at disc 4 of 9, I waited for about what seemed like an hour and then rebooted the machine. Next message NO OS FOUND No problem just grab your brand new XP pro disc (The one Sony is to cheap to include with your new $1900 machine) and reinstall the OS. I did a full format of the HD and reinstalled XP.
All went well machine started up and is working fine except for a few minor details The Fn keys do not function specifically the ones that control the screen brightness and volume?this normally would not cause any concern because you should be able to download all your system drivers from the manufactures web site . WRONG?all are available except for the one that fixes this problem?I would be ok with this if the screen defaulted to the brightest setting or somewhere in the middle but it is stuck at the lowest setting. All that said I ordered the recovery DVD?s from Sony and they should be here Tuesday .

All Sony can tell you is use your recovery CD?s and I will when I get them.

I was just wondering if anyone had a fix for this?
Can you do some editing to get them working?

Thanks for all help

I have a 505BX and did a fresh install a couple of weeks ago only to find what you found, along with the modem drivers from Sony's site not installing either. I had to use the recovery CD's but I believe there is way of extracting drivers from the recovery CD's.

They also tell you they do not support anything but the installed setup. Great tech support, eh?

Tech support from Sony sucks the Big One
I had to pay for the DVD's that should be supplied with the machine.
I have a Compaq and Dell laptops and they both came with recovory CD's

It came with XP pro and I reinstalled XP pro with SP1a and all drivers from Vaio's website for my notebook. Thats original but they still will not support it all they can say is use you recovory CD's

It would be easy to get that job...You only need one response to all problems

Use your recovory CD's

I was told by tech support that the function key software was on their website for my 505BX, but maybe they don't have it for yours?

It's their way of saving a buck by keeping a partition for recovery cd's but all it does it take up valuable hard drive space. After them telling me they only support the recovery cd version, I wiped out that partition and just recovered from the cd's. Then I just updated to XP Pro.

If you ever have a problem, the XP Home key can be read right off the bottom of the machine.

The Sony site shows there is the Sony Shared Library that "enables use of the system recovery media to reinstall applications under a "clean install" of the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system. " Maybe that would do it for a clean install?

Well i sell sony laptops at CC and we get at least 5-7 people per week with the exact same problem coming back in to complain. The recovery disks created with the built in program just never seem to work.

Calling seems to be the only option.

Hey Guys

The PCG-V505VDXP comes with XP pro installed ?º

I received the recovery DVDs from Sony today and did a complete reinstall and all works fine now. I just don¡¦t like the idea of having to use Sonys version of XP.
I have a Compaq 3045us and Dell 5100 that I upgraded to XP pro with no problem.

I like the little notebook I just don¡¦t like not having the option to upgrade or change the
OS with anything other than the Sony version. This all started with a malfunction of
a recovery disc creation. I did not see any warning that my computer would not have
full functionality if I used a store bought version of XP pro .

Does anyone know how to get a Vaio to work with a store bought version of XP?
This is the most intelligent forum on the net someone must know a way.

Thanks again for all help

Call tech support and ask them about extracting drivers from the recovery cd's. Then, once you have all the drivers and F-key utilities, you never have to call them again.
