claims to have seen the retail price list for Radeon RX Vega, which will allegedly be around $850
this cannot be true.

Unless the dreams of hidden performance are true
Right now, Hynix can charge whatever they want to AMD, and AMD would be forced to pass on the costs.
And the problem with that is?
I want Vega to succeed. I bought a monitor in preperation for Vega succeeding (I know, I know, daft).
Radeon talked the talk but as more and more info and benchmarks leak out, plus our data from Vega FE, we can see that it can't walk the walk.
So if it can't beat the (15 month old) competition, draws more power than the competition, and doesn't outprice the competition.. How is it not dead in the water?
No it doesn't.looks huge especially depth. like almost 3-slot. Probably not but doesn't bode well for power use.
Interesting that Kyle is going along with the "blind freesync vs gsync" methodology AMD has been showing, albeit with a 1080Ti.
1. With the counter off and his "playable only" settings, he could probably compare to that Volta making an odd appearance in this thread.
2. Wonder if the Vega review kits and AMD themselves are asking sampled sites to follow this test procedure to shift focus from raw numbers to Freesync savings.
3. Sad to see that rectangle blower box. From what we've seen with FE, the Vega is asking for an open air at least or a AIO at best. Anyone who said "OMFnGodxorz teh 1080 cooler is a crime NV pulled with all of us." should start thinking some even more overblown reaction to this because that HSF doesn't look good stacked against NVs chiseled aluminum look. (and Vega has been no 1080 in terms of heat and clocks under that cooler)
I guess thee AIO was too much to hope for at the price point they had to hit. :-(
So, (hypothetically) if it's basically the same price and performance as a 1080 you'll buy a 1080 instead? Because you could have bought the 1080 last year then.
Odds are anyone who needs a card today will look at relative price/performance today. This "beat 15 month old competitor" only matters to a select few who argue endlessly on forums.
That's the thing, the GPU market is already completely saturated. Pretty much anyone who wanted this level of performance has already bought a high end nVidia GPU. nVidia did not price gouge this round even though they could have. The mining has only compounded this. The market has been completely flooded at this point. The mining is basically giving free high end GPU power to the masses. The timing could not be worse for AMD with Vega. As you say, the only way people are going to buy the Vega cards are if they are priced significantly *lower* than the GTX 1080 cards. However all signs are pointing toward a GTX 1080 Ti price level. Outrageous, and also stupid on behalf of AMD. They have done this before with their pricing. If these rumors are true AMD is going to get burned, badly. So, (hypothetically) if it's basically the same price and performance as a 1080 you'll buy a 1080 instead? So hypothetically, if you buy waited 15 months to buy what is essentially a gtx 1080, you're biased towards amd over Nvidia. So, (hypothetically) if it's basically the same price and performance as a 1080 you'll buy a 1080 instead? Because you could have bought the 1080 last year then.

I just don't see what the market for Vega is based on what we know currently. It's offering less performance for more money, with way higher power consumption and pretty much non existent overclocking. Not appealing at all. The only people I can see buying it are those with $400+ Freesync monitors that would have to replace it with a Gsync otherwise. They are essentially trapped into the AMD ecosystem. This is a big reason why I'm not a fan of Freesync/Gsync monitors. They trap you into either one brand or the other. I would rather invest in overkill GPU power so I can play games pegged at 60fps on my 75" 4k HDR TV.Why do people around here actually think this is true? Do you work in PC sales? People buy GPU's all the time, not just at launch time, in fact the amount of people who buy GPU's early is probably only about half the market. I sell 1060's, 1070's, and 1080's all the time. People upgrade when they need it, sometimes they don't have the money at launch time, sometimes new titles come out that require a GPU upgrade, sometimes they buy new monitors with higher resolution. Get out of your enthusiast forum bubble for a bit, the market is not saturated, there is a lot of sales to be made still.
Or your GPU died, or you bought a new monitor, or there's an exciting new game coming out that you want to play at 60 FPS, or you've had financial hardship. The list goes on, not everyone buys new shiny tech every year.

Not surprising, but some interesting logic there. So hypothetically, if you buy waited 15 months to buy what is essentially a gtx 1080, you're biased towards amd over Nvidia.

If someone is brand neutral and Vega more or less matches a 1080 on price AND performance, why would a consumer choose the hotter running, higher TDP card?
Perhaps they want to root for the underdog? If someone is brand neutral and Vega more or less matches a 1080 on price AND performance, why would a consumer choose the hotter running, higher TDP card?
Really getting tired of all the secrecy surrounding RX Vega, Linus is posting pictures of the AI Instinct Vega, Epyc and ThreadRipper CPUs. AMD as well. We've seen Vega FE in Raja's hand a month before launch. But nothing about RX Vega, not even a single picture of a wooden screw dummy! Why? Just Why?
Do you think they used different settings and didn't tell us? When has [H] ever done that?
I think the "chiseled" look is ugly as hell. So, to each their own.
There is reportedly more than one model and an AIO model has been rumored.

It isn't just the secrecy, it is they are building a huge hype machine for something that they possibly can't deliver, and they are only setting themselves up for a huge hit on their reputation if that happens.Really getting tired of all the secrecy surrounding RX Vega, Linus is posting pictures of the AI Instinct Vega, Epyc and ThreadRipper CPUs.
