I've put up a page for benchmarking Sony Vegas 7 video editing software.

This application makes good use of of up 4 cores!

If you have a minute run the test.
Vegas7 Benchmark Page

You can get the Vegas 7 trial here:
Vegas 7 Trial

Additional Instructions
To enable Quad core rendering:
To enable Vegas to use all 4 cores go to "Options>Preferences" and then to the "Video" tab and set the maximum number of rendering threads to 4 since you have a Quad. Your score is right on for two cores being used!

To check the preview fps:

Grab (left-click hold) the five little dots located at the upper left of the preview window to undock it and drag it onto the work space. Then set the preview quality to "Best>Auto." Finally grab a corner and open the preview window so it's showing 720x480 pixels.

You can watch the fps counter at the bottom right of the preview window to the right of "Display." It will only show the fps when the video is actually playing.

I posted this the other day in the software section.
I am downloading the file and will post back later.
I have always found that rendering or saving to a different drive
than the source files speeds things up too.

A 60 second talking head DV video clip with audio rendered
to mpeg2, CBR 6.5 Mb/bits, with wav or AC-3 audio @224K,
elementary streams.
The only settings changed from default in all the softwares
was the bit rate.

My P4 3.0G system:

TMPGENC 3.0 Xpress = 98 seconds (AC-3 audio)
MainConcept/Vegas 6 = 98 seconds (wav audio)
CCE Basic = 34 seconds (wav audio)

My Core2Due e6600 system (stock speed):

TMPGENC 3.0 Xpress = 38 seonds (AC-3 audio)
MainConcept/Vegas 7 = 27 seconds (wav audio)
CCE Basic = 13 seconds (wav audio) [\q]

I couldn't find the fps thing...Am I only supposed to see that during playback of what I rendered?

I have 4 cores of QX6700@3.33ghz and 1gb of 1000ddr2 ....I did it in 122sec...

It sucks as 4 core performnace...only brief 20 second start and last 20-30 seconds did I even get above 50% cpu utilization...I saw 68-70 in the beginning and similar near the end with a max of 80%...the rest was lless then 50% and in the range of the 30-40's....

Could be iO limited...

I have seen other apps when using hidef codec and content tax the 4 cores far more efficiently...

The results:
e6600, P5B-E (stock speed), 2 Gig G.Skill, Seagate 3.0Gb/s 320Gig,

Video preview was docked in the default position.

Mpeg2 render = 188 seconds
Average 1-10 seconds = 21.467 frames
End 1st transition = 7.2 frames
End 2nd transition = 10.5 frames

By the seventh time I played the video it was at 29.970 frames
except the 1st transition.
By the tenth time I played the video it all played at 29.970 frames.

Deleted the files, re-unzipped with the same results.

It is at the bottom right of the preview window, Frame:
The numbers fly by pretty fast.

I should have provided better instructions, sorry about that.

First of you to enable Vegas to use all 4 cores go to "Options>Preferences" and then to the "Video" tab and set the maximum number of rendering threads to 4 since you have a Quad. Your score is right on for two cores being used!

I'm curious to see how that bad boy does with 4 threads rendering.

You have to open up the preview window to full size to get some real results. I've posted additional instructions in the OP.

Yeah, you just have to watch it and look for the average in the beginning and then the lowest just after each transition.

Vegas is pretty cool in that it will save the rendered frames upon every preview so after a few loops it'll be real time. When you make the preview window large it's much harder for it to do this in a short amount of time so the preview results are really only valid for "best" setting with largest preview window. i.e. native for the video.

Thanks for giving it a shot guys!
