According to the informed sources, Maxtor (NYSE: MXO) had failed to qualify it's drive (desktop) for Dell, which had impacted it's financial performance greatly. The company is contracting had announced a layoff of ~500 people earlier in July (see, for example, this article): http://www.bizjournals.com/san...004/06/28/daily44.html.

"The Milpitas, Calif., company lost $91 million, or 36 cents a share for the third quarter ended Sept. 30. That reverses the year-ago profit of $30 million, or 12 cents a share, according to generally accepted accounting principles. Revenue tumbled 7% from a year ago to $927 million."

Wow... if your drives aren't good enough for OEM's like Dell, that's pretty bad. I'll stick with my Seagates and their 5 year warranties

I appreciate a Seagate employee bringing up that news, without full-disclosure, thanks. Good to see that american business ethics are alive and well in this country.

Personally, Maxtor has been around for a long time, and I think that they will be around for a while longer. Once they ramp up production in their Chinese production lines, after they are on-line, their costs should drop somewhat, so that should help their profitability.

Not that I am any huge fan of Maxtor; quite frankly given my experience with some of their drives in the past I'm not, but I thought that I should provide at least a little counter-spin.

It is curious that Maxtor has gone through two CFOs in as short a period as it has, though. That alone does seem to raise some small alarm bells.

I've never had any problems with Maxtor drives (here we go...) myself; never had one die. I hope they stick around, we need as much competition as possible.

Any info on what exactly made Dell reject them?

I don't think Maxtor is known as an unreliable brand? Certainly not to me.

This could be any number of business issues, including price.

I've been buying Maxtor drives from CompUSA since 10 Gig with the store warranty. I haven't had to pay for another HDD since, other than updating the store warranty with each new drive they replace because they never make it to the end of the store warranty and they've always had to replace with nearest available size.

I make backups regularly though. Maxtor sucks so bad, I've come to rely on it.

yep, I currently have a 40gig maxtor that is like 5 years old running in my rig along with my raptor raid 0. It is my dump all the downloads in drive so that my OS drive doesn't get too fragmented. I have never had any problems with Maxtor and I hope they stick around.

Current price is 2.93 as of closing 10/26/04.

10/16/02 stock price was at 1.89. It bounced bact to 15.3 on 10/21/03.

Wonder if the history would repeat itself..... ? If the rumor is true (which I have not read it anywhere else, yet), I doubt it would.

I personaly feel Maxtor drives run hotter than WD. But I though IBM drives were too hot, too. Had one RMA with Maxtor which I thought they handled well. Havn't used Seagate lately. Never used used any other brands that still exist today.

What does "disclosure" have to do with the issue. You seem a little biased. I am just asking if anyone knows anything about the supplied links. Don't be so paranoid.

why confused?

it is customary - when in agreement with an earlier poster - to simply quote the poster . . . . the only addition i made was an exclamation for emphasis.

or would you prefer that i type out i also had zero problems with the Maxtor driveS i own/ed and that i ALSO hope they stick around 'cause we need as much competition as possible!

Competition is great as long as it's profitable for all of the competitors. If it's not, everyone cuts costs which affects quality warranties and R&D for the future. If customers want better and better drives, drive companies have to make money.

While I do have one Maxtor drive out of about 60 drives total on all my various systems, I am paranoid it will fail. In the uncountable years that I have had HDs it was always the Maxtors that died horrible noisy deaths. I gave up on em years ago but bought a 250gb SATA maxtor last year cuz I the price was great. but due to past expierience and countless maxtor failures I feel this one is gonna die the day after the warranty ends. Seagate all the way!

I'm not surprised in the slightest, I've gone through 3 Maxtors, and given 1 of them was a Quantum Fireball (laugh away), all 3 of em ended up having physical problems to the point of needing a clean room for recovery.
