If you believe that humans are somehow different from animals, on a level that we cannot comprehend, in such a way that allows to do stuff like paint a picture, or write music, or be upset enough to cry, then you can't believe that all it would take is a human brain to make it human.

See, though, there's precious little evidence for that. The only way we could ever find out though, is to take a human barin and put it in some other animal and see what we get.

congratulations, you've learned how to post a biased article with more alarmist speculation than fact.

now, like all little children, you must learn where to deposit such waste.

Yeah, like I said of course I cannot vouch for the truth of this article, nor can anyone else here, unles they're genetic scientists. But even if there is a slightest grain of truth in it, aren't the consequences mind-blowing, and indeed, disturbing? And maybe it won't happen today, but what about 15 years or 50 years?

I dont like the idea of creating hybrids like this, wouldnt it open the door for diseases to make species jumps more easily?

Sounds like pseudo-science trash journalism that's designed to do nothing but alarm people.

The very next paragraph is even dumber...
What if the mice escaped the lab and began to proliferate? What might be the ecological consequences of mice who think like human beings, let loose in nature? Weissman says that he would keep a tight rein on the mice, and if they showed any signs of humanness he would kill them. Hardly reassuring.

ummm... ok. so like I inject human brain cells into mice and if they escape and proliferate their children will have..... normal mice brains. Duh.

The reason why this doesn't alarm me is that, well, it's possible.

If it's possible, it will be done eventually. I'd rather it be done by REAL researchers than crackpots with crazy agendas.
Much like all new technology, it will raise interesting and difficult moral, legal, and social questions, which will eventually be worked out.

Life is change.

Pic of scientist and monkey.

"It's thanks to the wonders of genetic engineering that soon there will be an end to hunger, disease, pollution, even war. I have created things that will change the world for the better. For instance, here is a monkey with four asses. "

I don't see how this is disturbing. The creation of a smart mouse is crosses efical and religious lines? Religion does not matter, it has nothing to do with science or gov't in the us. I really don't feel it's unefical to creat a mouse that is human like. DOes it really matter?

But there are some frontiers that are not meant to be crossed. Creating a chimera is, IMHO, THE taboo left in human society. Thou shalt not fvck with our genetic code.

I agree 100% with you. I think cloning (within boundaries) and stem cell research will greatly advance mankind, but this is a bit too much.

Also: did anyone else think immediately of Fullmetal Alchemist when they saw "chimera"?
