PROBLEM SOLVED

Hi fellas,

I have Comcast as my ISP and I am on their 8mbps down / 768 kbps up plan. Anyways, I use a RCA cable modem and a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G). I wanted to leave my laptop at home and connect to it from work with remote desktop as I have done before (not at this apartment/this laptop). Anyways, so I set up remote desktop, create users, etc. and go to http://www.whatismyip.com to get my ip. I note down the IP on my notepad and go to work. When I get to work, I type in the IP and don't get any response. It doesn't even ask for login/pass. So I try pinging it and it doesn't respond. So I figure, maybe my connection went dead or something. So I come home last night and everything is perfectly fine, my IP is the same... weird. So today, I go back to work and it still doesn't work. What is the problem here? I don't have any firewalls except the Windows one, which is set to enabling remote connections.

So what is the problem here?

Oh and one more thing, when I go to a forum I moderate, I check my IP on there and its the same IP as what http://www.whatismyip.com gives... so that IP must be correct? Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Comcast may be proxying your IP address. You get 1 IP address from the ISP which is, in reality, an address on ISP's private network, which is then NAT'd and shot out onto the Web. Too many users and not enough public IP addresses to go around.

your router is doing what it is supposed to. not answer anything unless it was sourced from PCs on the inside.

you'll have to forward the ports remote desktop uses to your home machine, this is done on the router.

the other possibility is work is blocking those ports (as they should to prevent you from doing exactly what you are doing)

Steps to connect using Remote Desktop to a home PC behind a router:

1) Obtain your home's IP address
2) Set your XP Professional PC to allow Remote Connections
3) Check that XP's SP2 firewall is set to allow Remote Desktop (TCP/IP Port 3389) connections
4) Use a Static IP address on your home's PC.
5) Forward Port 3389 in your router to the Static IP address of your home PC.

Many routers and PCs using XP SP2's firewall will not respond to Pings by default.

well i already forwarded that port on the Routers Configuration... here is a screenshot of what i did: http://filebox.vt.edu/users/ckizilde/screenshot.JPG

Is that not correct?

About blocking the ports, that cannot be it because I asked 4 of my friends who also remote home from work and none of them had any luck trying to connect to mine...

For the love of God man stop and ask yourself this question. if my company has blocked these ports would they fire me for trying to circumvent the security system in place? chances are if they have blocked those ports then they are probably keeping a log of who is trying to get out using those ports. If the answer is yes then i would advise you to get up and back away slowly.

if the answer is no then search a little harder. there is a very easy way to accompolish what you need without detection. i doubt you will find that answer on this forum.
