VGA to HDMI converter problem!

We have a 65" plasma at work that has HDMI ports. Sometimes vendors show up with older laptops and want to hook up to the plasma through the hdmi port but have VGA connections on there laptop. I purchased this

but it will not work? I tried changing the settings, the resolution on both devices, even replaced for a new one. Still wont work. any ideas?

supported input (VGA) resolutions are as follows
640x480 @ 60, 72 & 75hz

800x600 @ 60, 72 & 75hz

1024x768 @ 60, 72 & 75hz

1280x1024 @ 60hz

1600x1200 @ 60hz

Are you trying it with one of those?

Those cheap boxes are all chinese knockoffs that just convert the analog to digital they don't process the signal to make it HDMI compliant so it is hit or miss if the tv will work. You have to set the source to exactly what the tv can display as these are basically dumb boxes. Input 640x480 and it will output 640x480 to the tv which most HDTV will not accept.

The boxes that actually convert the signal from vga to hdmi compliant and will work on 99% of the displays out there are about 8 or 9 times as costly. So when you see a box selling for $40 that claims to do what a $300 box does look elsewhere.

This is what you need. Look for the terms scaler in the boxes description.

Edit:
You could try 1280x720 and 1920x1080 and the tv may accept it. As those are the 720p and 1080p resolutions.

Yeah, make sure you're trying with a resolution actually supported by the tv. (and the device)

FYI most corp/business laptops do not have HDMI. If I showed up at your office and you had a presentation plasma (which will get burned in BTW) and expected me to have an HDMI port on my latitude it'd raise some questions.


IMHO you need to get a display better suited for this purpose. LCD (no burn in), VGA inputs that will scale or do 1:1 with whatever res is sent to it. Otherwise you will need to help every single person who tries to hook up to it.
