There are a lot of things wrong with this world and I'm not saying dogfighting is the worst, but for someone to get their jolly by watching dogs kill each other...that's just sick beyond belief.

JULY 17--NFL star Michael Vick was indicted today on a federal conspiracy charge for his alleged role in a dog fighting venture that operated from a Virginia property owned by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback. A copy of the indictment, filed today in U.S. District Court in Richmond, can be found below. The 27-year-old Vick, whose nickname is listed as "Ookie" in the indictment, allegedly established the Bad Newz Kennels in early-2001 in Smithfield, Virginia. It was this property, for which Vick paid $34,000, that the star athlete and his codefendants used as the "main staging area for housing and training the pit bulls involved in the dog fighting venture and hosting dog fights." According to prosecutors, Vick and his cohorts began purchasing pit bull puppies in late-2001 and would eventually "sponsor" individual dog fights with purses as high as $26,000. In the indictment's most harrowing parts, federal investigators describe what happened to some Bad Newz Kennels dogs that either lost matches or did not perform well in test fights. After a March 2003 loss by a female pit bull, codefendant Purnell Peace, "after consulting with Vick," electrocuted the animal. In April, prosecutors allege, Vick, Peace, and Quanis Phillips, "executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well in 'testing' sessions." These animals, the indictment claims, were killed "by various methods, including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground." (18 pages)

I hope he goes to jail, and I hope bad things happen to him while he's in jail. Abusing animals puts you somewhere just above a rapist in the prison bitch hierarchy, I would hope.

Now is definitely when we see if Roger Goodell means what he says, though. He should be out for the year at least, given that he's now been indicted.

My wife couldn't stand dealing with his mother and will probably cheer when she hears the report.

Let's not forget that he hasn't been convicted of anything. He's still innocent until proven guilty.

Of course, I think he's guilty, too.

How nice of the prosecutor to file the charges before the fantasy football season kicks off.

Good luck Mike. Enjoy your off time. It may be the last few months you can still shower in private.

Falcons respond

Flowery Branch ? The Atlanta Falcons issued a statement Tuesday night regarding the indictment of quarterback Michael Vick for his alleged role in a well-established dogfighting operation in Virginia.

"This situation has been troubling to many people, including our fans, during the last few months," read the statement issued by Matt Conti football communications coordinator. "With today's news, our club and team will continue to be tested as Michael works through the legal process toward a conclusion.

"We are disappointed that one of our players ? and therefore the Falcons ? is being presented to the public in a negative way, and we apologize to our fans and the community for that," the statement continued.

"Obviously, we are disturbed by today's news from Virginia. However, we are prepared to deal with it, and we will do the right thing for our club as the legal process plays out. We have a season to prepare for and training camp opens next week. Our plan is to continue to do everything we can to support our players and coaches."

AJC goes into details of indictment

hmm..I read that as: we still want vick to be our QB, but if that can't be, then we will be prepared without him.

vick is done. the falcons were still trying to shape vick into a good qb and he's never made that big step... now that he's gonna be away from the game for a while, i doubt he'll ever recover if he gets 1+ year layoff.

One more black QB ruining it for the rest of the other black qb's... looks like only Vince Young/McNair/McNabb can salvage the claim...

Warren Moon is probably shaking his head too

at least the Colts have one less team to worry about

COLTS SUPER BOWL CHAMPS 2007!!! WOO WOO

WTF are you talking about? I can't think of another black QB who has ever been in trouble like this...

Cordell Stewart... good guy
Warren Moon (as you noted)... Good guy
Vince Young... Good guy
Donovan McNabb... Good guy
Steve McNair (minor things)... Good guys
Cleo Lemon... a nobody, but never in trouble
Seneca Wallace... Good guy
Tavarus Jackcon... Good guy
Byron Leftwich... Good guy
David Gerrard... Good guy
Doug Williams... Good guy
Randall Cunningham... Good guy
Andre Ware... Bust... But Good guy
Rodney Peete... Good guy
Jamarcus Russell... Rookie... but noting to indicate he's anything but a good guy
Troy Smith... Chris Leak... Same thing...

Find me another black QB who has done anything remotely like this.

I bet they're glad they traded Schaub now.

My first thought as well. If they still had Schaub, they wouldn't miss a beat.

What makes Schaub more than a spare? He hasn't played that much, and when he has, it has been very mediocre. He has no track record, but then again, Vick was never that consistently good so maybe you are right

Schaub had a good outing vs. the Patriots link, but yeah, the verdict is still out on whether he can be a #1.

It's arguable whether he's going to get a fair shake, however, as he's probably going to get killed playing behind the Texan's OL.

The indictment alleges that the 27-year-old Vick and his co-defendants began a grisly dogfighting operation in early 2001 in which dogs fought to the death -- or close. Losing dogs were sometimes killed by electrocution, drowning, hanging or gunshots...

About eight young dogs were put to death after they were found not ready to fight in April 2007. They were killed "by hanging, drowning and/or slamming at least one dog's body to the ground," according to the indictment...

Authorities seized 66 dogs, including 55 pit bulls, and equipment commonly used in dogfighting. About half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact -- an arrangement typical for fighting dogs, according to the search warrant affidavit.

You know what they say about cruelty towards animals? That you're far off from being a serial killer!

I hope this mofo rots in jail for a nice long time...maybe give him 10 seconds in the electric chair to see how it feels.

They should make Clinton Portis fight Michael Vick to the death, or close to it, and then if one of them is still alive, whoever didn't perform "up to expectations" gets electrocuted, hung, or shot. Then maybe they would see that this is a big deal, it's a serious crime.

According to ESPN, Vick likely won't see a courtroom until 2008. Also, since Vick isn't a 'repeat offender' with the league, there's not much likelihood that Goddell will hammer Vick with a season long suspension or maybe a suspension of any kind....

Do you think you can fit Ron "Ookie" Mexico on the back of a jersey?

I whonder if the NFL has already added Ookie as a blocked name you can get on a jersey like Mexico.
