cybrshrk, of course you can NOT use a regular tv antenna. You have to use an external HDTV decoder box to a service provider or someone else, sort of like cable. I saw the $15,000 HDTV from sony and thats what it had running in the back. I would give it another 20 years before this goes big.

From what I understand, HDTV DOES in fact work over the air, and you can recieve HDTV broadcasted signals with a simple antenna. Thats why you see certain TV shows saying "Broadcast by Panasonic HDTV" or something to that effect... All you need is an HDTV Decoder, which is what this card does. Those HDTV decoder boxes, are like pre-recorded shows in HDTV that they use to show off the HDTV capabilities. There are also $800 HDTV decoder boxes, which basically do what the Hauppauge card does that we just ordered. Although the Hauppauge card has less features, and can't do "Hi-Resolution" which I'm assuming means something like it can't output a high-resolution signal through the S-video jack to the TV.

ALBundyHere -- you are very wrong. You just use regular antenna.

The WHOLE PURPOSE of this card is that it _IS A TUNER_, you don't need an exteranl converter box!

HDTV FAQ (one of many poor ones)
===================

Will I need an antenna?

Initially, digital broadcast television will only be available over the air. This means you will need an antenna. Most homeowners will be able to receive a DTV broadcast by regular antenna with UHF reception capability, however, like analog TV signals, it will be dependent on location, terrain and environmental factors. Outdoor or attic antennas will be generally more effective than set top antenna. In the future, DTV network programming may become available from your cable provider.

In simple terms HDTV = MPEG2 over airwaves. Just like digital cell phones vs. analog.

It could be a big hit for one reason alone: The TV stations can compress! this means that in the space of one "regular quality / size" TV show they can now send 6 ( "480i" style picture)! FCC allows them to get licenses really cheap as they want them to start generating content... so a lot of local stations have started to do it so they can "secure their space in the bandwidth".

Here in Seattle, our cable system has already converted to Digital... so they can cram more channels down the line. HDTV allows this same option. I isn't just about "better picture".

Most OTA Digital TV is broadcast in the UHF frequencies. So a UHF antenna is best. This card does poorly with the weaker signals. Dedicated set top boxes (RCA DTC100, Dish 6000) do better and they are now under 500.00.

This card will also receive and record HDTV HBO and Showtime from Dishnetwork with their 5000 receiver and HD modulator. About 9 gig/hr hard drive space needed.

This letter is to inform you that your order has not shipped. We have
imposed a quantity limit of two per customer on the WINTV-D item # HAU 697
due to the unprecedented demand. Please reply and let us know if we can
reduce the quantity of your order to two, so that we can continue processing
your order.

Cool! looks like i am getting two of these bad boys!

Perhaps this card is being discontinued soon... I saw that HP has a newer one ($100 more) on their site.

bargingunner, you are referring to the regular WINTV card, for $45

The one we are talking about here is the WINTV- D ( as in digital). Great deal from J and R considering its msrp is $299 and retails for $260-270
Probably a typoographical error

I ordered 2 of them, 1 when it was in stock on Saturday, and 1 more when it was out of stock on Sunday.

I called a CSR from J&R this morning 6:30 am PST , and she said that both were shipping today
