Video Capture Question

Ok, here's the deal. I've got a WinTV tv-tuner card, and it came with this software to watch TV & capture AVI video. The problem is my machine isn't fast enough to compress to DIVX (or similar codec) real time, so I have to capture it uncompressed (2 hr show = HUGE file). I tried the windows video editor thing, and it worked pretty good, but then I'm stuck in .wmv, plus it doesn't allow me to schedule recordings. I also tried Adobe Premier 6, and it worked pretty good, but doesn't allow me to choose what channel to record (would work well for capturing a s-video stream though).

So my question to you is....what software do you use to capture video and then later re-compress (if I can get it to .mpg instead of the .avi the included software uses I can use Flask to convert it to Divx).

Here's what I need:

Capture real-time to uncompressed (or mildly compressed) MPG
Ability to change channels on the TV Tuner card
Ability to schedule timed recordings
Ability to later compress video (i.e. MPG original output so I can re-compress with Flask)

If the software that comes with it doesn't capture to MPEG (1 or 2) then you are in a tough spot. Virtualdub has a vfw capture system, but it may not work for you. There are codecs you could use like mjpeg that would be better than uncompressed.

For reteail software, maybe ulead video studio, i've never used it though. Most applications not directly associated with your capture card won't work properly. Good luck!

EDIT: if you can actually store and uncompressed avi (thats a damn lot of HD space) then use virtualdub to compress it afterward. www.virtualdub.org.

Yeah, I wish I could just capture to MPEG, that would make life much easier. I do compress to mjpeg right now, but it still is in avi format and I know of nothing that will later re-compress that.

I use my Radion AIW card to capture, then edit with premiere and output to MPG (1 or 2) using Cinemacraft Encoder. There are many ways to do this.

If it's just 1 show, I might also capture to my Panasonic DVC80 camcorder, then firewire transfer the video with premiere to my hard drive, edit, encode, (and burn to DVD if I want).
