I use pinnacle studio 9 for video editing. I am sick up the crappy graphics card I have and having transition scenes stutter through play back. I would like something that doesn't have to think twice about backround rendering. I currently do not shoot in HD format and don't plan to until more equipment is available and the price becomes more resonable. What would be a good choice without breaking the bank Say preferabily 100-150 but possibly up to 200 if it would be fesible to pull the card and transplant it into a next generation system.

BTW I have a tyan mobo s2466 tiger mpx that has a 4x agp slot and 2 64 bit pci slots? I don't know if anyone makes a video card for 64 bit pci.

System info:Amd athlon mp 2000+ proccessors. Two. Hard drive is 36.7gb scsi with 160mb/s controller.

My current video cart is an Ati rage xl agp 2x. 8mb memory.

afaik video editing is completely CPU limited. If you are having problems with playback that could be a video card issue but is different than editing.

But that is wrong in this case. Avid/Pinnacle Studio uses DX9 to render some effects and for playback. Next month, Studio 10 will be released and it is based on the Liquid engine. Liquid uses much more of the GPU than Studio 9. Also note that DX9 audio is recommended. Since Liquid uses ASIO, don't try onboard as the audio subsystem is used during capture. It generally results in OOS (out of sync) issues using the mobos audio (Realtek for sure).

Since you aren't going to do HD, you do not *need* 256MB (1080i), you could go with a Radeon 9800/Pro/XT. But, I use a 9600XT and do well. But... a 9800 is less than I paid for a refurb 9600xt.

Have you had a lot of problems with pinnacle 9 shutting down in the middle of a project or while rendering it freezes. I have and am debating if I will upgrade to 10 or not. Anyways what kind of sound card is good for what is being done here without going overboard? When 10 comes out will it come with a hd capture card or can I use my existing pinnacle card which uses the firewire port?

With 9, no. With 8, yes. I use 9 mostly for some basic stuff like capture and quick DVD on a laptop while on battery (the no frills capture works on a 4200rpm drive). Since S10 is based on Liquid, the save feature will make any issues painless if they occur (it should be much more stable with the new engine).

It captures HDV via Firewire.

A Creative Audigy 2. M-Audio or Audigy 4 is more than you should need.
