Video card overheating?

Every time I play any video game I think my video card gets too hot. I've installed a good heatsink and better fans. I can keep the processor around 60 degrees... compared to 80 degrees before the heatsink and fans. So anyway, this makes me wonder if the video card is getting too hot. Before a crash I get the listed error message minimizing my game...

"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands".

I'll close out the message and continue to play... shortly after, the game totally crashes and a reboot is mandatory.

Asus Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

Its from a few years ago; sounds like it was some driver problem causing the core frequency to rapidly throttle and un-throttle. Are the drivers fully updated?

That's a nice power supply. I'm going to have to say I don't know what the problem is.

you should ask mods to move this to video section maybe? Those guys over there surely have more expertise in this area.

If you have it enabled, turn it off in the CCC, even if you have no overclock. If you do, reset it to stock.
