Video Card Recommendation

I am building a new system, AMD Phenom 720 X3 on a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UDP4 MB. I have been looking at video cards and can't decide between ATI and NVidia. I have only used NVidia cards and would like to stick with them but am open to suggestions. I like playing FPS games but am not a hard core gamer. I was looking for something in the $100 or less range. I have looked at Radeon 4830 and Geoforce 8800/9600/9800. Each time I thought I had the right card I found some negative review about excessive heat, noise etc. All suggestions appreciated.

Yeah, the new Radeon 4770 looks really good for the price. It's sort of like the HD4830 replacement, but uses less power, and I'm guessing it will overclock quite well.

If you can't wait, then the ATI HD4830 is really good for the money. I have this one:

Mine overclocks well past HD4850 speeds, while staying cool the whole time. Overclocking is easy- just enable it and run the auto-overlock utility and that's it.

If you must go NVidia, you can get the 9800GT for less than $100 after rebate:

AT stock, they are pretty similar in speed, although the HD4830 is faster once overclocked - it has a lot of headroom there.

Next step up would be the GTS 250 (aka 9800GTX+):

The new ATI card looks like it will be a winner in the $100 price range, though.

Perfectly said.:thumbsupersonally I'd go for the 9800gt for less heat n noise if thats what your worried about.
