With the 45/40 nm technology DX 11 video controllers arriving in October, and being fully available for the holiday rush, you are best to "wait"; your 500 watt PSU is a limiting factor. The new 45/40 nm technology DX 11 video controllers will consumer less power, generate less heat while offering more than the current offerings today.

500W may not cut it for any dual GPU setup, although it should be fine for any single card like the 4890 or GTX275. Also getting two physical ATI cards for Crossfire isn't that great of an idea with that motherboard. The second slot is only PCI-E 1.0/1.1 4x, which will bottleneck a a second card like the 4870.

I wouldn't invest in a mid-to-high end card right now. Not with new cards 2 months out. Your card is suitable enough to wait and get a better value on a newer purchase. If you must, if you can get a 4870x2 that cheap but then you need to cough up for a 650W PSU or higher.

I say sell your card and upgrade now.

1) We don't really know if new cards will come in September, October or November. When ATI releases DX11 cards, you will likely hear on the forums that you should wait for NV to bring out their cards before you drop $200+. Even if you go for ATI, what if NV releases a 25% faster card in 3 months? Forward Q1 2010 and by that time, ATI refresh may be around the corner in the spring - you should wait for that too, etc. rinse and repeat and you end up waiting forever. Upgrade when the games you play are not performing to your expectations.

2) GTX 280 1GB came out June 16, 2008 (gpureview.com) and cost a whopping $649. Now you can get the same performance for $150 in MSI GTX 260 OCV3 just 13 months later -> http://www.overclockersclub.co...gtx_t2d896_oc_v3/6.htm. In other words, no matter when you buy a new graphics card, it will always be surpassed by something quicker and cheaper - it's just a matter of time.

I just sold my 8800GTS 320 for $65 and will probably upgrade to 4870/4890 or this GTX 260 for $100. Then in 12 months I'll sell that card for $70-$80 and upgrade to GT300/RV870 which in 12 months will likely cost $160-$175 (with my total outlay being around $100 again). This way you can probably increase your performance 8x (2x per year) over the course of 3 years for $300 in total. Alternatively, you can buy a $300 graphics card and be very happy with it for the first 12 months but in the following 24 months its value and performance will deteriorate exponentially.

I am starting to think that this strategy may be superior to buying a card for $300 which may be near mid-upper to top of the line when it comes out. Previously I have purchased Radeon 8500 and 8800GTS 320 only to see their values and performance plummet 12 months after the purchase. If you sell every 12 months and upgrade, you stay just 1 gen behind, mostly doubling your performance on a regular basis for a fraction of the cost. I don't think there is a hard written rule (whatever works for you).

Just throwing my 2 cents out there for a different perspective.
