I'm looking to build a new machine and so far have a case and nothing else, the Silverstone 05 for those who are curious., but I can't seem to decide on which brand to go for.

It's either the 3200+ 90 with an eye for OC'ing or the P4 any Ghtz. As for the board, Gigabyte, MSI or DFI SLI rig or the Abit for the intel. Which would you guys recommend for general Adobe Premiere and Photoshop editing. I will be using the computer for tranferring DV footage and creating home DVD's as well as gaming.

Thanks in advance

In general the Intel will be faster than the AMD for Video editing but the AMD is definately faster in gaming and just about everything else.

arent p4s supposed to be better at multitasking? unless the speed-price advantage of the AMD lets you get a processor thats faster enough for the same money to outweigh the advantage. go with amd, gives you an excuse for elitism.

A 3.0, or 3.2ghz P4 with 1-2gigs of ram works nicely for video editing, and is plenty decent for games.

The Video Guys lean towards P4's with HT...

"We highly recommend Intel's P4 processors.
We feel that these systems offer you the highest level of performance and compatibility. We've found that our cards are easier to install on a P4 based system. Intel has also added a bunch of special performance enhancers to the P4 CPU and it's chipsets that give it outstanding performance for video editing.

I can attest that my dinky P4M 1.2ghz laptop (with 512mb ram and an ata-66 4200rpm drive) will handily outrun my desktop Athlon Tbird 1.4ghz (with 256mb and multiple uata/100 7200rpm drives) when it comes to any kind of video processing... strangely the Athlon is faster with audio though.

This is especially true for divx/xvid re-encodes and general avi decompression (talkin about VirtualDub here).

Fortunately for my poor desktop, a mobo/ram/proc/sata drive upgrade is on the way!

I don't see how the laptop is fraster since the most dependency of video editing is on clock speed. That's the main reason P4 is better at it than Athlons. AMD seemd to have found some way around this with the 64 series, since it's right on P4's heels even at almost 1GHz behind.

I have ordered my new parts and it will be an AMD system, which I will use for video-editing pretty intensive. I am indeed behind P4's as of now, but once the next steping 64 shows up I think it will be a totally different story.

My mistake! Just checked, the laptop is a P4M 1.4ghz, not 1.2. Even still I am surprised it still outruns the AMD desktop despite the obvious storage bottleneck.

I've built my system (see my sig) specifically for video/photo editing and some gaming. I am using Premiere Pro to edit/render/burn my videos. I eventually installed a couple more external hard drives (Seagate) to store and organize my digital files. I was thinking of upgrading to a 3.4 GHz EE P4 but decided that what I have is enough for this time around...

Aloha to all and Happy New Year!

That's because you are comparing P4 to the first K7's and because the laptop has double the RAM.
The HDD is not so much of an impact on the processing of a video to compress or format, but it helps when you are capturing and moving the huge files.

I would think it'd depend if you'd prefer overal 10fps more in gaming: amd!
and if you'd prefer 10 sec less encoding time: Intel.

of course getting some reviews will clear up some dust about ^, but which would you prefer?

Go with Intel. It's much faster at multitasking because of HT technology.
If you want a system that runs cool and costs less, go old skool and buy a P4 3.0c (Northwood). I have a P4 3.4c, but Newegg doesn't sell them anymore, they have 3.0. The MB would either be an Abit IC7 Max3 or an Asus P4P800.
If you want newer and the fastest, then you're looking a Prescott and there are new MBs coming on the market right now, so you read reviews and decide.
