Hi Everyone, sorry to revive an old thread. So per the final config shown above, we put the system together and it has been running well since 2014. We are now starting to play with 4K videos and I am wondering, if upgrading the system will be worth it. should i swap out the CPU and video card?

If it still has a 6850/70/* in there, that might warrant an upgrade, but what to is a good question. A GTX 960 is probably a safe middle of the road option, if you want to do that (might be overkill, but not too expensive, and has good enough compute performance to really help out, if it's not too much GPU for that's being created). But...

How much the GPU maters really depends on what is being done with the video, and the programs being used to edit and render. First, I'd check and see if the CPU is getting bogged down much, and if storage, which I don't see being precisely defined, in the past, is sufficiently fast. SSDs are cheaper than ever, and 4K raw footage might be a good excuse to look into HDD RAID 0, if the data won't comfortably fit on affordable SSDs.

The system config is the following:

i7 4790 (LGA 1150)
CoolerMaster 212EVO
ASRock Z97 PRO4
Crucial 32gb DDR3 8gb x 4
AMD Firepro W4100
Samsung EVO 500 SSD (system)
4TB HDD (don't know model) (storage)

Short Term: Motherboard went bad yesterday. I am think about getting Asus Mobo instead. Asus Z97-E or Z97-A (does it matter which model i get?)

Mid Term: can i just buy a better video card for improved video editing performance? (GTX 980 Ti worth it?) would M.2 500gb ssd have better performance than the current samsung ssd?

Long Term: go with Xeon or 6700K processor?

Your system has to be pretty fast editing vids. You won't see much improvement changing SSD's.
Yes the GTX 980 is better for processing 4k, but unless you''re in a hurry, I'd wait for newer cards that are coming out..

Looking for video editing machine. No Gaming.

Shooting videos 4k raw but primarily 1080P (full HD) editing.

CPU: Go with dual Xeon E5-2670 or single i7 6800?

Xeon prices are very good right now, but I have also read that for 1080P more than 6 cores does not help. Is that true?

GPU: 1070 gxt (dual or single?)
RAM: 64gb is enough
Primary HD 1TB SSD

Adobe AE, Premiere Pro

If I remember correctly Premiere Pro tends to use 4-8 cores well, but more than that is generally just wasted.

Single i7 6800k would be my choice. Newer more efficient system, (less power bills).Newer memory architecture i.e. DDR4. etc, etc.
