hell, i think $50 is too much sometimes. $40 is about right for me

But what if the game was totally revolutionary? The developer went through leaps and bounds and created a game that was so fun, so intense, so kick-ass? The reviews were 10/10 across the board?

I don't buy many games because I am always put off by the price. I'm just never sure I like them enough to pay the price to own them.

console games are more because of all the extra money developers pay in licensing. I usually buy my console games used.

Lately all i've been playing is WoW so I don't buy many games. 16 bucks a month i get all the computer gaming I want.

What I want to know is why haven't prices gone down with all the advertising they've put in video games now? They're obviously getting money from the advertising company shouldn't this help bring costs down?

hrm... I remember payin $50-$70 for NES games... same price range for SNES. Well, whenever I could convince my mom to spend that much on me. $50 isn't bad, so long as it's a good game. Unfortunately, I went on a game spending spree with the Wii... so far zelda and rayman have been worth it.

"Far Cry, Vice City, and maybe a few other games"
you seem to think they were revolutionary. why weren't they expensive?

Good question.

But my answer is that, while I loved those games, they were not trully revolutionary. Evolutionary, yes. But I would like to see a developer think outside the box, and create a game that doesn't just make people go out and buy a new cpu and video card, but a game that is so kick-ass that people who have never even played a PC game want to do so. The massive multiplayer online first person shooter mixed with the Sims and GTA? Tens of thousands of players? Of course, there are hardware and bandwidth limitations, but in ten years those limitations will be greatly loosened.

I have been misled way too many times by 10/10 reviews that said the game was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Looking at what is coming out today and (more importantly) what is popular, it seems pretty clear many publishers and players have forgotten about real entertainment.

Like I said before, the $50+ games arent the special ones, its the sub-$30 titles that get no hype and minimum attention which totally blow away everything else.

Sadly I've just been playing wow and that 15 bucks a month has given me access to a game that has filled up pretty much all my free time for gaming.

I do think Company of Heroes was worth the money has replay and is well made to be worth the money though

Way too much considering the bad quality and horrible replay value of most of them. Too many just get tiring after one runthrough and are never touched again.

Dark Messiah: Good concept, but too linear and with no replay value. The branching storylines aren't really that great, or branching.
Oblivion: Heck of a lot of replay value, but it dies if you get really far and then lose your savegames, like from a system format
FEAR, Far Cry, COD2: really meh IMO

:Q

Never speak "meh" about COD!
Agreed!!!

COD and COD2 may be the best values for gaming I have ever purchased besides Q2 and Q3.

but whats the reason for making it so expensive? people are creating new graphics engines and all that stuff all the time. games didn't go up because company a created engine x or company c bought engine r.

the day companies charge that kind of money for their games is the day i quit playing games.

The prices don't bother me. In truth, if you wait a year or so, it's actually pretty cheap entertainment. Just think how much fun you could have with $200 in brand-new PS2 gear right now!

I believe $40 for downloadable games (you get no media, just the download and license key) is the right price for new titles (nothing but the game with no copy protection other than a license that checks against people already playing when you are playing online).
$55 is fair for retail games that you buy in the store (to cover publishing / store cut)

depends on what you are buying, waiting is not good.

for example, an fps game with online MP. sure, people might still play it years from now but not like they did at release. while you're playing through BF2, a year from now, people will be playing BF9.

or in the case of an mmorpg, everyone is high level but you start out with no one to play with your level.

guys it's $50 ... $50. it will give you hours and HOURS of entertainment. Hell if I spend $50 on a game that I played for 10 hours single player and it has no multiplayer at all, it's worth it to me. That is $5/hour which is a lot less than I get paid per hour, so it's not that big a deal. Not to mention, if I finished it in a week, buying it on launch, chances are I can sell it used for $30 pretty easily. So scratch that ... $2/hour for 10 hours of fun.

Some of you guys are talking like these games cost $200/piece. $50 isn't even that much money in todays age.

That's what I do with DS games. Buy them used, play them, sell them. Pretty cheap!
