With price aside, what do you guys think is the OVERALL BEST computer speaker system on the market? The VideoLogic DigiTheatre DTS 5.1 System, Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's, Logitech's new Z-680's, or something else? I'm ready to pick up a new audio system for my computer and want your opinions. Money is not an issue... let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

From what I understand, the Klipsch 5.1s have a problem with the amp blowing. This is actually something that has bothered Klipsch 5.1 owners for quite a while, and the people in the forums are still saying that it's a crapshoot when you buy one of those speakers.

The Logitech Z-680s are great speakers but read this before jumping to get them.

I don't know much about the VideoLogic DigiTheatre 5.1s, however.

Don't know about which is best, but if you are planning to get the digitheater DTSes, I have heard you won't be able to use it with a computer and 5.1 mode unless you have an nForce mobo (which does DD decoding).

The Creative Megaworks 510D. Even better, they won't break the bank.

This isn't true. Since it has a built in decoder it will work with anything that can pass an AC3 or DTS stream through digital out including PC's which makes it quite unique in the PC realm. Also, the nForce supports DD encoding, lots of soundcards support DD decoding.

Well I love my Klipsch 4.1s and won't replace them until they die. However Logitech's speakers have been receiving great reviews lately and are gathering a huge following among computer audio enthusiasts.

I use Klipsch 4.1 speakers also, and frankly i dont like the way the logitec speakers look but they have gotten good reviews although i dont think they sound as good. Waste of time to say why just go listen for yourself thats the only thing that can determine which to buy with this type of product, no meaningfull benchmarks to compare. I would also try to listen to a pair of 4.1 EV SonicXS iv heard they really kick, heres a review of the 2.1 system.

What other soundcards pass an AC3 or DTS stream besides the nForce? (scuse my ignorance)

I sure love my Klipsch 4.1's. Think it's been like a year and a half since I bought them, still get goose bumps when I crank them up!

I purchased the Logitech Z-560 4.1 setup about four months back. I listened to the Z-560 side by side with the klipsch 4.1. The Z-560 had deeper base, and had better highs. The klipsch setup had a bit of a punchier base that you get from a smaller cone. Nothing wrong with that if that is what you like. Not only that, I feel I got the better speaker system for 70 bucks less.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any card currently available above $50 that doesn't and some below that do. Any card with a SPDIF or TOS out should be able to which is almost everything these days.

Aye, there is nothing like having an actual receiver and big floor speakers hooked up to the computer. I have to this day an old dolby pro logic receiver, two floor speakers, and 3 satellites. I can assure anyone that it beats the pants off any packaged speaker setup like my logitechs or klipsch 4.1 or 5.1 setups. Granted you lose that positional audio (whoop-t-do), but it rattles the floor with every explosion or hit. The sound quality is much much higher. There aren't gaps in the mids or between the mids and the lows. The bass is untouchable. Having said that, for space saving reasons, and ease of setup, I bought the logitech Z-560. (hooked up the old beast out in the living room)

You don't need bigass speakers to get good audio.
My Jamo E-800's do a great job, and they're quite small, and with the wooden color they fit in nicely on my desk

Ok, I just went and read up on this, and found that while works with computers with AC3 or DTS streams, it doesn't work with 4-channel EAX in games unless you have the nForce which does real-time DD encoding.
