Viewsonic LCDs the best?

I have never had/used a LCD monitor. I have been thinking about getting one of the 24 inch Dell widescreens when it comes out in March. I was in Best Buy the other day and happened to walk through the area where they have all the monitors. They had 12~15 different ones. It was unbelievable how much the one Viewsonic they had stood out from the rest. The image was very clean and crisp. The colors were full and saturated. It made the other ones look faded and hazy, almost washed out. I was somewhat shocked at how bad it made the others look. Is what I saw really the case? Are Viewsonics that much better? Or is there something going on that I am unaware of?

I didn't get up real close and examine it, but I don't think so. Whats the the deal with the glossy finish?

I have the VP171B-2 and I am extremely satisfied with the color quality and overall look to the monitor. 8ms response time doesn't hurt either

Some manufacturers/OEM's of stand alone LCD's (i.e. Sony, NEC) and notebook LCD's (i.e. Sony, HP/Compaq, Dell, Toshiba) are putting/requesting glossy acrylic plates on the front of their LCD's to give them a more CRT-like appeal (reduction of that washed-out look, appearance of richer contrast, especially with darker colors, etc.). Thus, it's basically an aesthetic feature (look at the Sony Xbrite's next time you're in BB, CC, or CompUSA for the most pronounced implementation of the glossy look). Notably, however, aesthetics cannot substitute for other aspects for which you should be looking (i.e. a DVI port...lack of a DVI port on an LCD these days is kind of ridiculous...a 3 yr warranty, etc...thus, I give you the NEC MultiSync LCD1765 with the glossy look but without the aforementioned features).

I have a Viesonic VX710 connected via DVI and it looks great. No dead pixels, all of the lines and colors are sharp. It especially looks good when you turn on nVidia's digital vibrance feature. It's only got a 25ms response time, but I see no consequences because of it. All aournd I would say they are excellent monitors. Plus the casing looks snappy and sophisticated.

I don't think it's aesthetic. I think companies like NEC are forgoing the anti-glare film and, thus, allowing brighter colors. Just a guess.

Well, I went back to BB today. The monitor I saw is a VX910. The other monitors were MAGs, LGs, a Westinghouse, and several Samsungs including a 912n and a 213T. They had them all connected to the same source, looping through a series of images. The Viewsonic still looked better than the rest until they brought up a shot with lots of sky in it. Then it was serious yuck time. All of them, including the Viewsonic, had serious banding throughout the different shades of blue in the sky. It was bad, really bad. Maybe I'm a CRT guy after all.

Yeah, I noticed some banding in certain shots on my own Viewsonic LCD (VP912B). One of the reasons I went back to a CRT... LCD's just aren't there yet... still waiting for the flat-depth CRP (cathode-ray-panel) monitors to come out that will be shallower-depth versions of the CRTs and cheaper then LCDs... that should kill-off all the LCD-love around here once and for all.
