I'm guessing you have a memory leak in one of your programs. Do what Twista said and see what's eating up all your memory.

You have enough RAM to run general apps.

I beleive you mean it should be set at "Let windows manage my virtual memory", unless you frequently run low.

No I mean it should be set at 2X RAM.

So that your system crashes if you hit the limit?

you should have more space on your drive, and let windows manage your virtual memory

click start | run
type cleanmgr and press enter
select drive C
clean all unused options, and press ok

This is what happens if you set your pagefile to min 2x max 2x and you hit the limit. After I took the screenshot, a few more apps crashed too (seti, mozilla) with "out of memory" errors. Note that I couldn't even do a "dir" in the command prompt. Maybe you meant min of 2x, and unlimited max.

How much memory did you have installed? Notice that 512 will be a total of 1.5 GB before this problem shows up. This is below the amount even most serious multitaskers would reach. I have never seen that error message before, but thanks for pointing it out. With 512 installed 99.99% of users should never see a problem with settings at 2X max.

I set my page file to 50mb and wrote a C program that allocated 800mb (2 nested for loops + memory leak), because I didn't feel like actually figuring out how to use 1.5GB of memory, but my point is that if you don't either set the max absurdly high, or let windows manage it, there will be some point at which you'll have bigger trouble than the temporary thrashing that occurs when the pagefile has to be increased.
